Guest Hiten.
India's main hope in the Australian Open, Sania Mirza, has advanced to the second round after beating Uzbeki wildcard entrant Iroda Tulyaganova. Sania, the 31st seed, had a minor stutter to begin with, and was broken in the first set. But she recovered in fine style, bringing out her full array of strokes and completing an emphatic 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour and nine minutes. Sania had 21 winners to her opponent's 15, but what made the difference in the end were the 11 double-faults by Tulyaganova. Sania will face an unseeded opponent in the second round, but could potentially meet 8th-seed Venus Williams in the third round. Mirza has struggled with injury over the last year, and the problems have continued in 2008. She had an average outing in the Hopman Cup team event before reaching the quarter-finals of a Tier-IV event in Hobart.
apocalypse
Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna won their respective doubles matches in contrasting styles to make it an all-win day for Indians at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Wednesday. Sania and Australian partner Alicia Molik seeded sixth, won a two-hour battle against the unseeded Greco-German pair of Eleni Daniilidou and Jasmin Woehr 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Bopanna teamed up with American-Indian Rajeev Ram to oust the British-American duo of James Auckland and Sam Querrey 6-1, 7-6(4). Bopanna and Ram are next up against the winners of match between the fifth seeded Indian-Australian team of Leander Paes-Paul Hanley and unseeded Luis Horna of Peru and Austrian Stefan Koubek. Sania and Molik, meanwhile, will take on Russians Nadia Petrova and Elena Vesnina, who breezed past local favourites Sophie Ferguson and Trudi Musgrave 6-3, 6-4. Sania, who on Tuesday won her opening round singles encounter, and Molik were tested hard in the engrossing first-round clash. The sixth seeds had no trouble pocketing the opening set in just over half an hour, capitalising on their opponents' poor serve and several unforced errors. However, Sania and Molik were in for a shock in the second set as Daniilidou and Woehr broke them twice in the 40-minute contest to draw even and take the match into a third set. The decider was also an even battle but Sania and Molik came out trumps after breaking their opponents thrice out of the six chances they got. In contrast, Bopanna and Ram were in fine form as they held serve and broke Auckland and Querrey twice to take the opening set in just 25 minutes. The second set was a bit more testing but Bopanna and Ram came through after their opponents failed to convert their chances.

apocalypse
Melbourne, Jan 20: Sania Mirza whose impressive run in the singles ended after a brave fight against Venus Williams, managed to keep her hopes alive in doubles as she advanced to the third round of Australian Open here today. However, Leander Paes and Paul Hanley, seeded fifth, received a major upset by Rohan Bopanna and Rajeev Ram in men's doubles. Sania and her Australian partner Alicia Molik defeated Russia's Nadia Petrova and Elena Vesnina 6-3 5-7 6-4 in a rain affected match. The Indo-Australian pair will be up against the 12th seeds Belarus' Victoria Azarenka and Israeli Shahar Peer who ousted the Swiss pair of Emmanuelle Gagliardi and Patty Schnyder 6-3 6-3. Meanwhile, Bopanna and Ram proved a little too good for Paes and Hanley 6-3 3-6 7-6 (6) in the second round of men's doubles. Bopanna and Ram will now take on the South African pair of Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie in the third round. Sania's doubles partner Alicia Molik paired with Nathan Healy to go down 6-1 6-4 against Sania who partnered Mahesh Bhupathi in mixed doubles. The Sania-Bhupathi pair will now lock horns against second seeds Lisa Raymond and Simon Aspelin in the pre-quarterfinals and is expected to face a tough challenge.
