A group of students of a government school in Faridabad on Thursday found a small snake in their mid-day meal, prompting the district administration to launch a probe in the incident.

Sources said that the incident occurred on Thursday when the students of Government Girls Middle School in NH 2 area of New Industrial Township were being served their mid-day meals.

Eyewitnesses said that right before some girls of Class Seven were about to start eating, one of the students spotted a small dead snake on her plate and raised an alarm.

The district administration was contacted and officials immediately stopped other schools from consuming mid-day meals supplied by the ISKCON Foundation.

A sample of the food was later collected and sent to a laboratory for testing in Chandigarh. There are 371 schools where mid-day meals are served in Faridabad district.

A committee, under tehsildar of Faridabad, has been constituted to conduct a probe in the whole incident.

Contacted, vice chairman of ISKCON Food and Relief North India said that the school had not shown them the snake that they found in the food.

“ Our food is cooked in 120 degrees Celsius temperature. There is no chance that even an insect can enter our kitchens, forget a snake “, said Dhananjay Krishen Dass, the vice chairman.

He added that the food is handed over to the mid-day meal in-charges after thorough checking. “Today too, the food was checked before being handed over. The in-charge of mid-day meals in this school accepted the food against a proper receipt,” he added.

Dass said that generally it had been found that schools keep the cooked food under trees in the open which increases the chances of insects falling in the meals.
