Pathankot terror attack martyr Kulwant Singh’s younger brother and his wife were allegedly thrashed by a travel agent and his accomplices over a monetary dispute, the police said on Monday.

Hardip Singh and his wife, Kulwinder Kaur, were beaten up outside a shop in an area falling under Bhaini Mian Khan Police Station on May 13 and a video of the incident went viral on social media.

The dispute arose after Hardip gave Rs 9 lakh to the travel agent, Gurnam Singh, for sending him abroad, Gurdaspur sub-inspector Vijay Kumar said.

After Gurnam failed to send him abroad, the family demanded that the money be returned. The agent gave them Rs 5 lakh and promised to return the balance amount as well, the police said.

When he failed to honour its promise, Hardip and his wife decided to lodge a police complaint.

On May 13, Hardip and his wife were on their way to a police station to lodge a complaint when they stopped at a shop to recharge a mobile phone.

There Gurnam’s family members appeared and they allegedly started thrashing Hardip and Kulwinder.

A case has been registered against 11 persons, including Gurnam, under relevant sections of the IPC, the police said.

However, the family of travel agent was absconding, the police said.

Hawaldar Kulwant Singh was among the seven security personnel who lost their lives when four terrorists sneaked in from across the border and attacked the Pathankot air base on the intervening night of January 1 and 2 last year.

Kulwant was a resident of the Chak Sharif village in Gurdaspur.

What is this obsession with "going abroad" with punjus - on either side of the border.

His brother was a Hawaldar, you can assume their financial background.

It's not like Punjabi's are failing abroad, its actually opposite. Sikhs are like Jews, so few in number but everywhere and very successful. This is one thing admirable, they desire and strive for better things, risk takers, big earners and big spenders. They do not swallow 'Mera desh Mahaan' and 'Bhartiya Sanskriti'. Very flexible and open to change people with good mindset. Nobody likes to leave his family, but its courage of Punjabi mothers who send their beloved sons abroad for better life.

You can keep choosing to focus on the success stories.   And feed the 'positive' stereotypes - but reality doesn't quite line up with that.  All this dialogue-baazi about mother's courage is bit OTT.
