BCCI Official claims Kumble using Kohli's name to get his own payhike

Recommended Posts

In a sensational revelation which will have far-reaching implications, a senior BCCI official has reportedly claimed that head coach Anil Kumble used captain Virat Kohli's name to strengthen his demand for a pay hike.

A senior BCCI official, on conditions of anonymity, told CricketNext that Kumble had asked for an extra allowance for Kohli during his presentation. But, the report added, Kohli personally has not asked for any hike yet.

"Never would Virat Kohli be on the same page on the captain getting paid extra for discharging the captain's responsibility. In fact, I have personally had a word with him once or twice and he has always said that every player's interest should be taken care of, but especially those who play just one format should be priority.

"Actually Kumble wants to tag a few people just to strengthen his case. But his demand that the skipper be paid extra is mind-boggling," the official said.

Interestingly, the Indian board on Thursday invited applications for the position of Team India's coach, as Kumble's tenure comes to an end after the ICC Champions Trophy next month.

Many considered this move as a result of fractious relationship between the coach and the Indian board, mainly arising out the demand for pay hike.

Yesterday itself, Kohli had said that BCCI is only following a due process by inviting fresh application for head coach's post.

During their interaction with BCCI officials and Committee of Administrators early this month, the coach-captain duo reportedly requested for a 150% hike in their pay.

Kohli's response about Kumble was pretty lukewarm as well when asked in press conference

However asked specifically about Anil Kumble's contribution, Kohli said that when a team does well, it is due to the equal contribution from all and sundry.

"Obviously, when you have results come your way, the contribution is from every part of the team. It's not from a single source, to say the least. Everyone works hard equally, if not more than the other person," the skipper said.

Looks like Kumble has tried to use the teams good performance recently to bolster his position .

Not just has he asked for a hike , he wants to be into team selection too.

The guy is a coach and should stick to coaching.

If he wants to be part of selection panel, quit coaching and ans become a selector.

No one should have that much power.

As for increase in pay.

He is already the highest paid coach...getting paid more tham half the team combined.

How about asking for contracts for ranji players instead. Of course, not his job .

But bcci should look into that.

They should also make a pool of non contracted players who are in the running for national team but haven't made the cut. Give them some sort of contrat.

Regarding Kohli's lukewarm response.

Probably doesn't like the gun fired from his shoulders.

He should stay away from this nonsense between Kumble and Bcci .

He has put up his views on increase in pay for players and should stick to that .Let others deal with other stuff.

Do you really believe Kumble is in need of more money? Indian Coach already is paid highly. Something else is cooking in backdoor. This seems an attempt to tarnish Kumble in this tussle.

Yes...he has asked for it according to news.

If he hasn't , we will know soon.

The most important role in Indian cricket (outside of those actually playing) opens up and presto we get snide and unproveable stories from 'sources' who prefer not to go on record.

The BCCI official who spoke on 'conditions of anonymity' most likely has his own axe to grind.  Perhaps he's running for coach himself or wants his one candidate or perhaps he doesn't like Kumble?  Planted stories are ALL very standard when 'anonymous sources' jockey for position.

Who knows.  But this is sure - true or not, what a childish story.  Seriously, the arricle's like, Oooh, oooh arrey ji Kumble is using Kohli to ask for more money Ji!

Erm, so what? Seriously even if he did it, so what really? Gossiping teenager girls are better than this.

IMO, as of now this feels like pathetic and quite disgraceful attempt to play on our gullibility by bringing in a popular name, Kohli. See how the story gets many people against Kumble just because it is alleged he is using Kohli?

And second, the story claims a sensational impact but it seems (to me) that no journalist is willing to take a byline - now which self respecting hack would not take credit if this story was so sensationa (Edit  on this l stand corrected - On CricketNext the original source, someone has taken a byline) Last it's Zee News, not exactly the epitome of journalistic excellence or integrity. Or CricketNext for that matter, which seems the original source.

In other words, I could be totally wrong, but at this stage am willing to bet this story is a plant.  Sourced from ambitious scoundrels, written by cynics and for gulling fans like us.

The fact that BCCI has a) invited applications for the coach role, and b) leaked these stories showing Kumble in poor light, clearly show that BCCI is not keen on Kumble as the coach. Knowing BCCI they like the meek or the quiet kinds who don't open their mouth and keep to themselves without bothering BCCI.

BCCI would rather go with someone like Duncan Fletcher who don't bring much to the table for Team India as long as they keep to their lanes. One more reason why Indian cricket has historically under-achieved coz success of the team is an after-thought as long as the BCCI babus are not inconvenienced or held accountable.

There might be a genuine difference of opinion between Kumble and BCCI, but this anonymous official stuff from the media usually turns out to be non-sense.

Most likely a media hitjob. Question is, who is trying to unsettle the team atm?

I believe it is also kumble who has vetoed or ignore all calls to appoint a fast bowling coach for team India. I won't mind if he goes even if the optics look bad for the BCCI in this case.

Umesh even indirectly asked for some bowling coach to help them. :facepalm:We don't even need a head coach to be honest.

Yup, its really a mind boggling to expect your skipper to get more pay, who's also your best batsman across the three formats.

Spoken like a typical third rate politician. In a way, both SC and Manohar, did well to screw these guys up.

Its part of plan to sack kumble and get his rcb coach into team and no he is not your best player in Tests LOL

  1. Don't trust these so called sources
  2. Even if Kumble asked higher salary, I don't see anything wrong in it. Many employees do that. It's unusual for you to expect higher incentives, performance ratings and promotions.
  3. Kohli can't get more money for being captain. That will not be a good idea. Everyone is contributing to the team Captain makes decision after taking inputs from all team mates, so there is no reason to pay extra just to one person.

The civilized thing to do would be to discuss the issue with Kumble at the next BCCI board meet and not go public.

The fact that someone thought it necessary that the matter be leaked to the media says a lot.
