Axar Patel

Recommended Posts

Does he have a chance of making it back into the side ? He is not a wicket taker but he will bowl economically and not concede more than 45-50 runs on batting pitches where spinners get no purchase. The seamers can attack from other end and could pick wickets because of pressure. Regular spinners have no chance of taking wickets on those pitches anyway and will go for runs.

If you look at most sides nowadays, there are no regular spinners in their lineup unless its a wrist spinner. Even then, SA opts only for Imran Tahir who has experience and a good bowler. Even SC sides like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh didnt play any specialists in CT and Pakistan also relied on Hafeez.

Better to opt for a batting all rounder who can bowl spin like perhaps Krunal (or Deepak Hooda or someone else) or go for a spinner like Axar Patel than a wicket taking spinner.

Should have stopped right there.

He is not a wicket taker and not needed.

Its not that simple. Often times, someone needs to hold one end while other bowlers can attack from other end. Ashwin and Jaddu are examples of being completely ineffective on flat wickets in terms of building pressure by letting batsmen score freely whereas Axar has been good at stopping run flow.

In flat wickets you can't hold one end up .Axar is nothing but an inferior version of Jadeja and Jadeja isn't good enough.

We already have Pandya who is the 5th bowler. So the must criteria is that the other 4 are wicket taking bowling.

Wicket taking ,that is the only way to.contain run scoring in flat wkts.

Not useless containing defensive bowling in middle overs.

You take wickets by building pressure on flat tracks, not by bowling magic deliveries because pitches dont offer anything. Of course, in overseas conditions there is a bit more help for seamers, so you need the seamers to take wickets with the new ball or with reverse swing while you have other back up bowlers(the seamer AR or a spinner) not give runs away and build pressure.

Problem in this side is you have 2 spinners who are not able to build pressure and letting batsmen score freely. You either opt for a spinner who can do a holding job or a wrist spinner. Kuldeep is an option and he will take time to develop as wrist spinners generally do and other option should be someone like Axar. If he can also bat, its an advantage.

Fed up of defensive bowlers. Mindset needs to change. Wicket taking bowlers are the way forward in era of flat tracks.

That's not the way game is played nowadays. You have to be practical. Of course, seamers should be wicket takers but you need one spinner to do the holding job whether its a batting all rounder or someone like Axar.

so failure of Jadeja results in replacing him with an inferior version???

I think Axar is more economical than Jadeja. Ideally, it would be good to have a wicket taking wrist spinner but its not easy to do that role. Let's hope Kuldeep or Chahal can become that good. But as an alternative, it would be good to have a spin option who can bowl economically on flat tracks rather than Ash or Jaddu who seem to be completely ineffective even at holding job recently.

Axar is even more 1D than Jaddu is.
