PBN
It's actually 10 states according to the article itself After years of reasonably good healthcare, rising literacy and infant survival rates, 10 states, including South India's big four, virtually form a country distinct from the giants of the Hindi heartland. India's fertlity rate is now 2.6, the number of children born to each woman, but the rate in the southern states has fallen below two. That is below the replacement level of 2.1, the level at which population neither increases nor decreases. Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh (including Telengana) have fertility rates that match the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway – 1.7 to 1.9 children per woman. Fertility rates in six other states – Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi – have also fallen below replacement levels. cowboysfan
Population reduction is essential for India from stop being a third world country.we are not China so Education and better health care are the only way to achieve that and the Southern states have already shown that to some extent. G_B_
man maharashtra really does not come across well on the suicide front. Even within maharashtra its marathwada and viderbha where things are concentrated. BJP gov have failed to address the root of the problem in Maharashtra farming....sugarcane. Temujin Khaghan
since when is Maharastra north India? do Marathis consider themselves North Indians? I don't think so because I lived in Mumbai for a couple of years and had a wonderful time and the locals weren't very arrogant... (P.S. for some naive ICfers, this is just a joke post) Edited July 27, 2017 by Temujin Khaghan

Detonator
I agree. I run into too many old people lately. Couple of weeks back I went to Pondy, there was a gang of 10-12 men all aged 40s stayed in nearby resorts, dancing shouting etc.,
