Personally has been average.I thought he was special player when i watched him play that brilliant innings against aus chasing. But injuries earlier on and lack of runs overseas so far apart from SA means, he has lot to prove ,hopefully he does because he is a special player.Mind you averages more than 50 in test cricket.

The problem with Pujara which was on display even today is his SR at the start of his innings. He simply gets stuck and is unable to even rotate strike which not only eases pressure on himself but put pressure back on bowlers.

If he has to depend on spinners and tiring bowlers to cash in he will have hard time scoring runs overseas. He will get out as good ball is always around the corner when playing in England, SA and Australia.

He cashed in on Steyn's absence for his only hundred in SA.His problem in England last time was not form but his total inability to keep the tempo going.

I like him as a person and in SC conditions against spin he is one of the best. But his inability to rotate strike even after getting set is what disappoints me. He waits for the bad balls to score runs and against quality attacks, there won't be many bad balls. And it only takes 1 good ball to get out.

Regardless, he really needs to work on his strike rotation and need to add 'a bit more' xfactor to his game as modern test cricket has evolved.

Every player has his own matrix of strengths and weaknesses.  Another issue with Puj is his weakness against the incoming delivery at pace.   Although that delivery will trouble most batsmen.

Bottomline, every top test team needs to have guys in the top order who can bat time - Pujara and Vijay are the 2 guys who I would trust to bat time in a pressure situation - the rest although more fluent and better at scoring quickly are just not solid enough.  ChePu brings a lot of value to the test team.   If we do have to consider sacking VK as captain in tests in the next 3-5 years, I would consider him as a serious candidate for captaincy - he's in the first 2 names you write down for the test XI as a batsman.

Dravid can face 100 deliveries without scoring a run and not take any pressure. Pujara is such a batsman and with him and Vijay it'll add balance to the lineup.

I voted for the good/average option, but good is the correct choice. I can't argue with someone who says his career has been great as well, as there is plenty of evidence for it (2nd fastest to 4k runs, 52+ average, lots of tons scored, and some signature innings like as opener when we toured last time).

I personally wouldn't say great, solely because his overall average outside of Asia isn't up to the mark IMO. I am fully confident that he can correct his record this time around in our overseas tour leg. Once he does that, he will be in the category of ATG.

While every player has his own strengths and weaknesses. Pujara in order to bridge the gap between good batsman to great category has to change his style. There was absolutely nothing about this bowling attack for him to go into that kind of shell. To his credit he really increased his tempo later in the innings.

Unfortunately for him he will be facing bowlers who are always on the kill. His pattern of going so slow will put so much pressure on his partners too.Ball will doing something for whole day in these countries.Unlike our fast bowlers who tend to give up after first spell other teams fast bowlers keep coming back and that is bad news for a guy like Pujara.

Agree to disagree.  He can score plenty against pace once he's set.   Too bad Chepu doesn't line up with some mythical batsman that you have in your mind.

The strike rate argument I don't really get. Based on statsguru:

Cricinfo didn't have strike rates for Sachin, so I couldn't post his here.

So, if we look at the strike rates, we can see that Pujara has a similar career strike rate as Laxman, 48 vs 49, and both have quicker rates than Dravid 42. We can see Pujara's strike rate is skewed toward Asia where he scored at an over 50 strike rate as in Ind/SL, but a lower one overseas. However, his overseas strike rate, specifically in Aus/Eng/SA is actually more rapid than Dravid's.

Pujara

SA: 43.49   AUS: 42.67  ENG: 43.52

Dravid

SA: 34.86   AUS: 39.57  ENG: 41.35

So Puj is more rapid than Dravid in all three of the above countries. Pujara simply needs to not get out, and start converting the starts he gets in those countries.

He has not shown he can score plenty against pace so far in his career. The only century he scored in SA was when Steyn or Morkel got hurt and Imran Tahir was bowling lollipops.

His problem was not survival he was doing that just fine but scoring runs. I have always liked Pujara from day he showed his fearless approach in scoring 70 odd against Aussies.

I would take Pujara over any other current batsmen in world in subcontinent conditions.

Everyone takes pressure I'm sorry I misused the words. I meant even under that stress he won't throw his wicket away and Pujara is similar. Still a long way to go to be compared with Dravid overseas.
