Can Congress party sideline the Gandhi family and revive itself

Lack of internal democracy for decades and systematic curb on rise of alternative leadership has ensured that the Gandhi family remains at top of party heirarchy long time. Moreover promoting loyalists to top echelons means there is always an impression that party wants them as their leaders even though there might be discontent among workers.

Many people in party itself feel that party needs a change in leadership, however those voices have not gained much hearing.

Off late it's clear that BJP and Amit Shah has been on a mission to destroy the Congress party. They have been ruthless and recent Rajya Sabha polls have showed that they are willing to make them work very hard for each and every seat.

I personally believe that existence of strong opposition is necessary to keep govt in check in India and with the possibilities that BJP might get second term after becoming stronger, it is required more to keep fringe elements in check.

However with Gandhi family Congress party seems to be hopeless and there are not many who would wish them to come back to power. But since party already has roots all over the country, if there is a rebellion in the party and complete change in leadership then this party has all the ingredients to become strong competitior to BJP. It may take a decade or more to systematically weed out loyalists of family in case of leadership change.

Will Congress be able to revive itself?

BJP is becoming too strong . It is not good for democracy.

All fault lies with the two jokers born to the Gandhi family and the spineless chamcha culture of congress.

The rest of the opposition is too caste based. That itself is not good for the country.

Gandhis have to go even if the party splits. Even with the split, opposition will be stronger compared to a united congress with these jokers leading it.

feel without Gandhis the Congress will split into factions and there wont be a national party.

They are better of without actually. They were better party before Sonia joined. They had pv who did great. Then they elected sitaram kesari. It is also amazing how pv even made the government stand for 5 years after the lack of majority he got.

You said it all.

We just need a totally new party where the are committed to virtuous political practices or else LEFT side of the politics wont stand a chance. AAP had great prospects of it happening but they completed screwed it up. They have messed it up for the united opposition for a long time to come.

I think it is too easy to blame the Gandy's for INC's downfall. The party has always been about the Gandy's, since Nehru hijacked PM'ship from Sardar Patel, refused to disband the party as per Gandhi's wishes, altered the Congress party rules to allow Indira to become president, and then Indira completely splitting the party in half, expelling many people who were part of Congress since the independence era and replacing them with people like Communists, etc.

To blame the current duo of Sonia and Rahul is just making them scapegoats: what exactly happened under Sonia Raj that was out of character of the Congress? What exact policy was it that was changed by her that one can blame for the INC's downfall? Which Congress "principle" was sidelined by these two?

The Congress has always been exactly the same as it is now policy, behavior, and culture wise, since the days of Nehru. Looking to blame the current version of the Gandys for all the current trouble is more searching for an easy answer than actually introspecting.

dude they were struggling before Sonia. Say what you may about her she improved the parties fortunes. RaGa is the problem.

The real problems started for the Congress when they failed to counter Mandal politics unleashed by VP Singh. Rao may have been responsible for many economic reforms but he just did not handle the political situation in UP and Bihar well. Even before Sonia took charge the party was 4th in UP and a non entity also ran in Bihar. A situation that remains today.

UP and Bihar have 25% of Indian population living in them. How can you expect to compete if you are on a downward spiral in these states? Add Tamil nadu and WB where the Congress was in terminal decline and thats 36% of the country where the Congress ranged from weak to extremely weak in 1998 when Sonia took charge.

The only political entity expanding across India is the BJP. A good chunk of that is primarily due to the hardwork of the RSS who act as the people who gain the BJP the first foothold. The number of shakhas under Bhagwat have expanded 400% in the last 7 years. So this undercurrent of expansion began long before even Modi was elected as PM candidate. This is something the middle classes will never understand. The RSS are the ones doing the hard work for the BJP.

And its not just the Congress. Lets look at the Left---> in decline TDP once ruled AP outright and is now just limited to AP. Within a span of 3 years is a non entity in Telangana. In jharkhand rjd and Jd(u) were important players. Now reduced to 0.

What we are seeing is the creation of even more regional outfits. The number of regional outfits in the last 20 years with atleast more than 20% mlas in state legislatures has drastically increased. The trend is towards smaller and smaller outfits. Big Indian states dont have one regional outfit but minimum of 2 regional outfits.

In such a scenario if the Congress Balkanizes if you remove the Gandhis its going to take a hell of a lot of time for one party to emerge to challenge the BJP. The BJP had the RSS structure to provide free cadre and manpower. This accelerated from 2 in 1984 to 282 in 2014.

Dont just expect the BJP to sit static. If the congress splinters the rational logic would be to create smaller states and allow regional parties in these states to rise to make it even harder for a pan national entity to emerge. Established Indian regional outfits are mostly family based. creating smaller states kills them in those new states.

Congress promotes caste and religion based divisions, minority appeasement and wants them to live in fear. So it is morally corrupt and members' own interests are primary. So corruption and apathy towards Janata comes naturally to them...we need opposition, a nation wide opposition party. But sooner the Congress in its current form becomes a non-entity, the better it is for the country.

Don't see Indira's Congress surviving beyond 2025 especially in today's networked world

and after the Ahmed Patel fiasco, it will only get worse

i thought Congress had decent leaders to take it forward after kicking out Papu and that Italian mafia granny, they have Chindu, Jairam Ramesh, Pilot, Pranav mukherjee, Fernandes

but all zealously back the Italian Gandhi family, sometimes wanting Priyanka Vadra to join too...they must have huge financial stake.

There is no hope for congress, the sooner it dies the better and a more formidable opposition can come up
