Mankad was an allrounder, Hazare a proper bat, so how are they interchangeable? What happened to Merchant?

Unsure who should get picked. Hazare and Merchant both were very good batsman. When I starting writing that post I added their names first and later found that team is already full upto no 6. Team already has 2 spinners as Bedi and Chandrashekhar, so if Mankad is picked then we can drop extra spinner and pick one seamer. However, Indian spinners were better than many of our pacers even in away matches.

Shastri rarely opened  in tests. Anyway don't rate him much as player.

Hazare

Vishy

Mankad

Kapil

Engineer

Prasanna

Chandrasekhar

Nissar

Mankad was at his best when opening. I'd push Merchant to 3. Gavaskar, Mankad, Merchant, Hazare, Vengsarkar (Vishy was a HTB), Amarnath, Kapil, Kirmani (better keeper), Pras, Chandra and Nissar. Lot of bowling options: 5 + 1 (Hazare), and batting till 8.
