Dressing Room politics - Chappell & Ganguly look back at the dirty spat

Recommended Posts

Fans of Indian cricket definitely remembers the Chappell vs Ganguly incident which occurred between late 2005 & early 2006. That era can be easily termed the dark phase of Indian cricket since the performance of Team India took a real hit. Those of us who needs a reminder I have listed the major incidents here all of which started with the appointment of Gregory Stephen Chappell as the coach of Team India. For more detail on this topic read this article.

Chappell's appointment

  • Previous Coach John Wright didn't renew his contract after Team India's bad performance in Champions Trophy & Border Gavaskar Trophy vacating the coach position.
  • Amongst other contenders like Dav Whatmore, Mohinder Amarnath, Graham Ford, Desmond Haynes, Tom Moody and John Emburey Chappell gets the appointed as the coach with full support of the then Team India captain Sourav Ganguly.
  • Right from there after coach and and captain relation went south

The blame game

  • Accusation from Chappell against Ganguly started with the tour of Zimbabwe.
  • Chappell asked Ganguly to step down from Captaincy & focus on his batting.
  • Chappell blamed Ganguly of faking injury not to face the new ball.
  • Chappell's mail to the BCCI where he takes pot shot on Ganguly both as a captain and a batsman.
  • BCCI intervened and tries to mend their relation.

Ganguly dropped form ODI & Test[

  • Ganguly missed first ODI against Sri Lanka due to injury and Team India performed well under Dravid. Thus even when recovered Ganguly was not selected in the ODI team.
  • Even though Ganguly was selected for the first test under Dravid he was dropped from the 2nd.
  • This caused much turmoil in media and fan protest especially in his home town of Kolkata

His Comeback

  • Despite all this Ganguly did make his comeback the big way. He returns to the Test team and scores 87 in his first innings that too coming at 37/4.
  • Scores 51 in Johannesburg helping India win.
  • His good performance made him into the ODI team as well and he gives great performance.

Chappell quits

Pathetic performance of Team India in the 2007 World Cup resulting in early elimination put immense media pressure on Greg Chappell. This made him quit ending his long spat with Sourav Ganguly.

So this is the current  summary of what happened between Chappell & Ganguly.

This article clearly describes the events in more detail and is a must read.
