India No. 2 in ODIs despite having same ratings as South Africa: Here’s why

India climbed to the No.2 spot in the ICC ODI Rankings

It was at this very venue, Eden Gardens, when India beat New Zealand last year to climb to the pinnacle in Test rankings. They have maintained the spot since. Virat Kohli’s 92 and a fine bowling display by Indians guided the side to a remarkable 50-run win against Australia at the same venue as they went to achieve same rating as ICC No. 1-ranked South Africa.

The buzz in the social space is India are the joint-ranked No. 1 side. Indeed, the ICC official website states that both India and South Africa are tied on 119 ratings. The rating is calculated on the basis of points accumulated divided by the matches played by the sides. South Africa have 5,957 points from 50 matches which gives them a rating of 119.14 to be exact. At the same time, India have 5,599 points from 47 matches which takes them to 119. 13 (119.1277, to be more precise). In other words, India missed out on the top spot by a mere 0.01. Another win, however, should seal it for them.

Before the start of the game, India were a decimal point behind Australia, and were at the third spot. The win has helped them to climb to the No. 2 spot, pushing Australia to No. 3. Last year India entered the Indore Test against New Zealand as the No. 1 Test side, a year on India have the opportunity to get to the No. 1 ODI spot at the same venue. Now off to September 24, to Indore.
