New Delhi: Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has once again put his weight behind Ajinkya Rahane and he also hit out at selectors for dropping the stylish opener for the upcoming T20I series against Australia.

Despite putting on a fine performance with the bat against Australia in the ODI series, Rahane was once again dropped from the team but KL Rahul — who didn't play a single match in the series — secured a place in the squad. This has not got down too well with Gavaskar and he has let his feelings known.

"The man (Rahane) who has scored four consecutive fifties, why is he not included in the team? KL Rahul is a fine player, but he didn't play a single game in the five-one day matches against Australia, why is he in the team and Rahane who scored four half-centuries is not there," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by NDTV.

This is not the first time that Gavaskar has batted for Rahane and has hit out at the selectors for constantly dropping him, despite his good show with the bat. Earlier, during the ODI series against Sri Lanka last month, the little master lashed out at the selectors.

"It looks like all the nice guys are being left out and they should start getting a different hair style and some body art done too to get picked in the team. Rahul got yet another chance while the top scorer of the just-concluded One-day series in the West Indies - Ajinkya Rahane - sat out once again." Gavaskar wrote in a column for a leading daily.

In the end, Rahane could play just one match in Sri Lanka (5th ODI) and that too after opener Shikhar Dhawan had to return to India to look after his ailing mother. Moreover, Rahane was then left out of the one-off T20I against Sri Lanka as well.

On the other hand, when Rahane was asked regarding the same, he said that he respects the decision taken by the team management and the selectors.

"Yes, so much cricket we play, the team management, selectors take a decision and we respect it. It (competition) is necessary and it helps you to give your best performance. Whoever gets a chance does well for the team. I have always enjoyed the competition," Rahane told reporters.

India are scheduled to play three T20Is against Australia, with the first match set to be played in Ranchi on Saturday.

someone shld tell little master that T20 is a different format :phehe:

Selections should not be made on emotions but logic, t20 requires players to have s/r above 100 or close to it, Rahane struggles to maintain 80 so is poor, so is Dhoni, Dhawan for T20, time to blood new guys, Hooda, Pant n other guys.

close to 100? In T20s, we need career SR at least over 125, preferably some batsmen hitting SR of 135-140 and some 140 plus. Minimum requirement is 125-130.

An opener in T20 needs a strike rate of min 125 with an average of about 20 , so with byes and wide etc the average score with said strike rate will be 160.

Batters at 6-7-8 need a min strike rate of around 130 as in most cases they will face 6-7 overs. Average of 15-20

Rahane has an average of 21 with a strike rate of 113. Which is not acceptable.

Rahane, Dhawan and MSD just dont have good enough strike rates for the positions they bat at.

SR of T20 batters batting at  1  to  4

Rahane has a SR of 113

T20 needs players who can produce big gigantic overs when needed. Rahane is never known for that. I remember Gambhir/Viru put on like 76 runs in 5.5  overs against NZ in 2007 world T20 before India fell to Vettori.  Rahane can never do that.

rahane in that semifinal vs wi said 150 160 would have been a good score

I can take bad performances by any player if he has potential or upside to be a match winner. Rahane has neither this nonsense Gavaskar is spouting that Rahane has hit 4 fifties in row is so wrong. As an opener especially on these Indian pitches you should have ability to play big innings once set. 4 fifties and no hundred prove one thing Rahane has zero upside .

Rohit also like Rahane has limited ability to rotate the strike but he can make it up with big hits .

By this I am saying even when u lower the bar to lowest possible then too Rahane is a poor choice for T20 player where just strike rotation won't do, but u need to score on Ave 180 to 200 in 20 overs and that requires a S/R around 150 or above
