Managing the workload of Shami and other Team India pacers in domestic cricket

Recommended Posts

I see that Shami has bowled 30 overs in 4 sessions in his 2nd Ranji match of the season.  I think he bowled 23 overs in a day in the first match. This is too much workload for an injury-prone pacer. He is being rested in ODIs to manage his workload ..... but is being bowled to the ground by his Ranji captain. This is a serious issue and demands a separate thread.

A fit Shami is very important for our success in SA.

The BCCI should see to it that his workload is managed in the Ranji Trophy.

Shami needs to get match fit and is rightly being asked to play Ranjis. You cannot expect them to be wrapped in cotton wool, they are bowlers and they need match practise.

He should play Ranji matches and stay match fit

But bowling 24 overs a day is not necessary

Around 18 overs broken into 4 spells is what strike bowlers bowl

Problem is we tend to over manage...risk that when we need him the most in the South African series,he might be rusty..same goes for Umesh....Has Ishant played anything since his last test match? And on the other hand we have Bhuvi the next option who might be overworked.....next is Thakur etc and they are still raw.

We need to get the balance right.

If Shami's workload is not being managed then my question is .... why is he not playing more ODIs, a format where he averages 24 and excels in

Played 3 FC matches on the trot, 3rd one still going on

We need to get the balance right.

Play the international pacers in FC but keep their overs per day within 20

A demarcation must be made between strike pacers and work horse pacers

p.s - Do you remember maniac, how Srinath was over bowled as he was our only good pacer .... the same thing happens in FC.

Shami is not playing in odis because two Bs are bowling really well.He and Yadav are expected to be main test bowlers .Yadav is a very fit and fine athlete. Shami has not been the same since England series which is over a year ago.He needs to get some over 18 or 24 it is not a big deal in my view.

Hardly being used as a backup ODI bowler even when no FC going on.

One would assume it is due to work-load management.

Try bowling them and your view will change

18 overs a day means 4 standard spells ..... 5 + 5 + 5 + 3      or 5 + 4 + 5 +4   or something similar

24 overs a day mean  5 standard spells or 6 spells even .... it means very little resting time between spells and this often leads to injury

In overseas conditions bowling 24 overs in 4 bowler attack is not unheard off. It is like he is bowling 24 overs every day.

Injury-prone pacers are advised not to do it.

It is the precise reason why India and other teams are playing 5 bowlers these days ....  so that average overs per day per bowler come down from 22.5 to 18... any extra bowling is done by the workhorse pacer and spinner.
