Srikanth Kidambi - How good is he?

Recommended Posts

Indonesia Open, Australian Open, Denmark Open and now French Open. This guy has been on a roll. How good is he? Can he be a top ranked player for a longish period of time? Is he already the best Indian male badminton player of all time?

It seems like this is the Golden Age of Indian badminton with Kidambi, Sindhu, Nehwal, some other male players also doing well.

Golden age may be a bit premature, but yes, things are looking good with the shuttle-cockers aren't they?

Bit premature??? We have 2 Olympic medals in last 2 Olympics...that is 2 more than our entire badminton history.... we have 3 top 10 ranked badminton players....we have won almost every major badminton championship.... if that doesn’t qualify this as golden age than not sure what will.

I take it you don’t follow badminton.... which is ok

Add saurab verma , Sameer verma , Ajay jayram , Gurusiridutt , Praneeth , Kashhyap and Prannoy all in top 100 and capable of beating any one on their day . Recently even our doubles teams have had some great results , which has been our wekaness .

The difference was probably coaching . The new Indonaisan coach has made the big difference , in the past they would do well early in their career and go downhill . Lately you see a sudden turnaround in most of our players performances , even KS hadnt done much after the china open win against lin dan few years back . Kashyap was more talented from what I have seen , but he just dint know how to stay at top when he was playing well .

Watch out for Lakshya sen , supposedly the next big thing

What is your point? Golden Age of Indian badminton means we are at our best time in our history of badminton. At no other time in our history did we have so many World beaters or so many Championship winners. This is definitely the Golden Age of Indian Badminton.

Why should that matter? We have more men players in top 50 than any other country including the erstwhile superpower China. In terms of medals and achievements Sindhu and Saina are the best 1-2 from any single country since the 2012 period when China had Li Xuerui and Wang Yihan as their top 2.  Our players are medal contenders in every single tournament they step into, if this is not our golden age then what is?

Before these 2 girls, we never had any top female player to speak of. Among men we had Gopi who won the All England once but wasn't successful in the superseries', let alone Olympics and World Championships. Padukone is by popular opinion our greatest male player of all time but if you look closer at his achievements, there is one big question mark. Chinese players weren't allowed by their government to play in any sport, that is true for Olympics also, China didn't participate between 1956 to 1980. Padukone had to deal with only Danes and Indonesians who were very good. But when China returned to participate they obliterated the field and showed who's who. Modern day Indian players have to deal with the Chinese day in and day out, Srikanth's China open win over Lin Dan, the GOAT of badminton alone is a greater achievement than what Indian badminton combined achieved before the mid 2000s.

Badminton is such a soft sport,  why do medals in such a sissy sport even matter?  Any male who plays shuttle cock is just LOL .

Badminton is more demanding than cricket. I take it you have never stepped into a badminton court in your life. And good job trying to downplay something in which we have excelled thanks to determination, hard work and lots of sacrifice. Those players have shed blood and tears trying to make our country proud and here you are troll, sitting behind a laptop insulting those very same people. No wonder Indian sports is so pathetic, with sample pieces like you ready to throw jibes and insults at fellow Indians who bring laurels to their country.

And even if badminton is a sissy sport (which it is not) in your enlightened opinion medals should be cherished. Even if the sport is carrom or snooker/billiards or chess or golf, the players have to beat the field comprising people who have spent their entire lives trying to excel at that particular thing. When they win their hard work and commitment should be respected even if you have a negative opinion about that sport. More so in India where sports funding and sponsors are so hard to get by unless the sport is cricket.

Yes,  Badminton is so intimidating. I know what is more demanding,  7 feet Black monsters from West Indies  bowling express pace or grown up men carrying rackets to play shuttle cock.

The ultimate Girly Sport.

Cricket is a skill based sport but also a very lazy sport where a Ranatunga or Inzamam can make it big. Badminton requires supreme fitness, endurance and speed. It is even more exhausting than tennis whereas in cricket you spend most of the time standing and doing nothing.

You have a curious definition of "manliness".  And you clearly haven't played badminton at any level other than the "keep alive" backyard style.  I suspect your fat arse would probably pass out after a couple of proper rallies.  :p:

Looks like he might have played only this "version" of badminton before:
