Suresh Raina’s poor run with the bat continues in Ranji Trophy

Suresh Raina has had a poor start to his Ranji Trophy 2017 season as the left-hander has managed just 72 runs in seven innings.

Suresh Raina, Suresh Raina Photos, Suresh Raina runsSuresh Raina has had a forgettable start to his Ranji Trophy 2017 season.

  • Suresh Raina was hailed as one of the fittest players in Indian cricket team but now he is spotted working out in the gym and consistently posts photos and videos of him lifting weights and working on fitness with different trainers. Away from the team for quite some time now, the Ranji Trophy was expected to be the tournament which could help Raina return the national side.  That would have been the perfect script for the left-hander but it wasn’t the case to be as the runs are just not coming for Uttar Pradesh’s captain. Before the start of the Duleep Trophy in August, Raina had told The Indian Express that he will “try to stay more at the crease and that will give him more run.” Neither did he spend much time at the crease nor he could score runs.
  •

With only one fifty in the Duleep Trophy, Raina entered the Ranji matches with enough match practice under his belt but not many runs. UP’s first game against Railways had a funny end. They needed 92 runs for a win but folded for 72. Raina managed 6 and 29 in the two innings.

Since then, his scores in five Ranji Trophy innings are — 0, 5, 10, 16, 6. UP are currently playing Assam in Guwahati but Raina was dismissed for six runs by Abu Nechim, bolwed.

Like the bowlers in international cricket, bowlers in domestic cricket are also aware about Raina’s weakness against short-ball. Ishant Sharma targetted him with that during UP’s game against Delhi at Air Force Ground in Palam. Though he has been bowled thrice in seven innings, it’s evident that short-ball-coming thought is at the back of his mind.

While Raina has thought of spending time at the crease, Uttar Pradesh’s chairman of selectors, Rizwan Shamshad says sometime players need time to get used to multi-day cricket.

“I don’t think there’s an issue with his technique. He’s played mostly one-days and T20 cricket, so [multi] days cricket is a bit of an adjustment. When a player comes back to domestic cricket from internationals, a lot of things are different. He doesn’t spot a lot of things at this level. It takes time to understand how to make runs in domestic cricket again. The day he shows patience and sticks in, everything will work out,” Shamshad was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Raina may not fit in this category though. He has been out of the Indian team for two years and apart from his IPL stint with Gujarat Lions, he hasn’t really played high-level international cricket. As an assistant coach of Gujarat in IPL, Sitanshu Kotak also watched Raina and says he doesn’t find anything wrong with Raina’s batting.

“No player is good with every area,” Kotak told ESPNcricinfo. “In fact, I’ve seen him play the short ball really well. But when you get out a couple of times and people bowl short at you, then everyone thinks you’re weak at it. A lot of other players never get tested in that area. He still plays outstanding innings and outstanding shots. The only adjustment is he wanted to work on his fitness and I see him doing that. So that’s a good sign. Sometimes in this game, it happens. It’s happening with the UP team too.”

Suresh Raina is not helping himself to comeback to the national team if he continues to play like this. He is still very valuable for LOIs. Let us hope that he stages a spectacular comeback like the rising phoenix from the ashses!!!!!!!!!!!!

This........ he hasnt improved at all. I get baffled when people talk about his comeback or being harshdone on. Well he was dropped for poor perfomances and now fitness has also dropped.

His problem of short ball still exist and the fear has of that led to many bowled in last few years which is also mentioned here .......he has been bowled thrice

Hahane too has struggled. Worst cricketer right now. Needs to be dropped for good from all formats. He is only good in tests. We need excellence which he ain't. Even in best form, he doesn't cash in.

Time to invest in KL Rahul, Iyer, pant, Pandey in test cricket. Forget this buffoon from Mumbai. Another mumbaikar needs to go as well from both T20 and tests. He should play in ODIs until 2019 world cup and retire.

What can any one do if he is not able to overcome his weakness that even kids in domestic cricket know about?

He has himself to blame for this .

This is an age where batsmen are becoming innovative to counter the innovations made by bowlers and Raina is not even able to overcome his basic problem.

Ganguly was poor against Short ball all his career. In fact, how many of our 90's players could play shortball well. I dont think Raina can overcome his inability against shortball at this point his career however he can wear them out like he used to and stop getting out to those fuller deliveries expecting the shortball.

He was skipping important domestic tournaments like Mushtaq Ali & Vijay Hazare as well for no reason.
Even his UP coach commented that he has become a reluctant cricketer & has not been concentrating after he became a family man.

Its a tough task for Raina if he wants to make a come back in the side.

Looking at the way how Pandey,Jadhav and now Iyer is struggling, it wont be that hard. Raina is a way better hitter than all these three and once he gets back to his old fitness and show some good form in List-A, he wouldnt have much problem getting back to his favorite Number 6 position.Hard to find a player like him as all our young 'sooperstars' are domestic bullies.

Not these days.

Teams plan much better.

He is getting planned and taken out in domestics.

I do feel Raina will have last swansong. He did work hard in off season by working extremely hard on fitness and then going to Netherlands to practice with kirsten and other Netherland players. His focus has probably more been on fitness than on his batting. I do feel witht ime he will score some runs, anyways first class cricket isn’t his best suit, will be nice to see how he ends up doing at the end of this domestic season which includes domestic ODI’s and t20s.

That all said, he played well in recent t20s for India and is still a better twenty20 player than Dhoni, Manish Pandey, Pant, Dhawan, Iyer etc. all these guys are good in various different formats but not in t20.  No one comes close to Raina in t20s for India. Only Kohli and Rohit.

Video analysis is not a new concept and was there even in Ganguly's days. And in first class cricket, you can bowl bouncers as much as you want but not in limited overs. And even the likes of Yuvi struggled in Tests. So being a good LOI batsman is diferent from FC performance, especially in this era of super pattas.

Well said.. Our t-20 side is a mess. How in earth players like raina and rahul are not able to make the cut is beyond me.. Raina is a ideal no.  5 who can guide the youngster down there as well as he is a left hander.. We can keep with rahul if pant is not ready

Yep, 20 overs doesn’t put too much stress on wicket keepers, so Rahul can easily keep and even Pant.
