Why the push to field players in all formats?

Recommended Posts

A lot of Indian fans, including some credible ICFers are calling for players like Jaspreet Bumrah to play tests which would mean he would be fielded in all 3 formats. I do think Bumrah would be ok in test cricket but do we really want to excessively 'milk the camel' and send him to the illustrious list of Indian trundlers? Recent examples of potential world class bowlers who India killed off through burn out and confusing them between different formats include Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma...selectors mismanagement set Indian cricket back by about 5-10 years. Dennis Lillee has previously moaned that Indian bowlers over train and bowl for too many hours and that this holds them back. By implication- same things can be said for over playing them. Also remember, all players will want to play in the IPL and so the stresses on an Indian cricketers workload is greater than ever. I say stick to specialists for each format except for in exceptional cases. I can currently only think of two atm who we can not do without in all formats: Virat and Hardik. They are also having to be rested mid series which looks a weird (but necessary); imagine a whole lineup being rotated in this manner. It would be very unappealing as a player.

Great great point..>> Really do not understand this urge to use the same players for all formats.>>>

Bumrah is a very good death bowler and very very precious for LOI cricket. he might as well do well in test cricket but that will take whole lot on his body. At least for fast bowlers, we can have discretion of not using them in all formats.

Let Umesh and Ishant be used as test specialists in the place of double B's in LOIs. Let Bhuvi be used if needed sometimes but let Bumrah be saved from this hellish gargantum of playing 200 days an year. His kind of bowlers need rest as he is more in the league of Malinga who is not that needed for test cricket.

Why would anyone (I repeat anyone) want Ishant to be a test specialist? His bowling was on par with Carl Hooper and Mohd. Sami (Pak version).

Ishant is a test specialist, i.e. he does not play LOIs any more. You keep harping about his performances etc. but he is in the Indian squad. I am not bringing him from somewhere but is part of the plans of the selectors/team management. If he fails again he will be discarded and then he will no longer be considered "test specialist". He has played more test matches than most of the pace bowlers who played for team India and is rightly a "test" specialist. Sorry but your judgement of him based on stats do not prove him otherwise.

And the thread is not about who should play as test match specialists. The thread is about using different players for different formats..>> since in particular fast bowlers fail to keep fit if played in all three formats continuously.

50 over WC is the no.1 trophy in cricket. It is more valuable than overseas test series wins in Oz, Eng, India and sa. It is more valuable than T20 WC and any other trophy in cricket.

Don't disturb bumrah as of now as he is our trump card in the upcoming WC2019.

Wc is every 4 years

test matches priority till then . Wrap him up and done others in cotton wool 8 months before wc . Before then let’s get him in tests squad and can miss odis

Despite the above, hope BCCI sticks to their guns and plays him in only one format.

Tests and ODI’s have different rankings for a reason, they’re different formats. No need to compare them. A series away win against 2nd ranked team is as good as if not better than WC win

I am not in favour of bumrah in tests from post one on this matter.

Fear of bumrah losing his LOI exploits and also because respectfully disagree with those who think his bowling is suited for tests also.. Strongly disagree about Ishant being ruined due to confusion. Ishant has no confusion because he has no intelligence. He is just a bowling machine.
