Why cricket craze declined so much

Was watching this footage

Look at crowd in Australia , how crazy they were going and in 2015 WC they did not even come to watch, there are footages of Holding bowling and West Indians were coming from here and their to watch

West Indies , England , Australia , looks like in these countries cricket has completely lost its support. What is so surprising is that Australia is dominating ODI cricket from 1999 yet their people have stopped supporting them. What went so wrong for cricket?

Smart phones, laptops and loads of TV channels are taking up a lot of free time.

Exactly, before social media or in fact before the internet became powerful apart from real social life (meeting people face to face), television was the only source of entertainment and cricket was not a commercial sport yet. Plus the game was in a balance between bat and ball.

its just a perception.

I regularly meet Aussies,South Africans even carib folks who state cricket as their first sport (ofcource its ridiculous with south asians), meaning as a response to what you do with free time?and the like questions or i play cricket/football with my son etc. Its just the English who feign allegiance to football often and pretend cricket is a very low priority may be they want to pretend since it is demeaning for them to play with convicts and savages in their minds.

Earlier i use to remeber there was gap in series , now i knw there is a series every month. Their is no wait an anticipation.....

Every team posed some challenge - even SL, WI, ZImb, pak whose match winners u can keep on counting and now i see the team and i feel like were is the challenge ...........

Same bilateral crap, miss those tri series

Social media has made stars to reachable so the stardom n aura isnt same anymore

Pitches around the world have become same batting fest, earlier every nationa had diff challenge. U go to lanka ull have slow pitches, Go to aus those quick bouncy wkts, Wi- those unpredictable wkts........Ab sab patta hai

Also the commentary it was of high standards , now most commentators around the world makes mute the TV

You are getting old !:phehe: Past is always glorified and nostalgic. We always like to watch videos of these famous games.

But the truth is there are games like these even today. Lot of T20 games turn out like this. And overall yes audience has become smarter, too many options to choose from with regards to sports and entertainment. So quick, good competitive matches will get more limelight and fanfare which happens in IPL and other T20 leagues around the world.

WC 2015 final was a one sided contest hence you cannot get such atmosphere. There has been plenty of matches in WC, Champions trophy, Asia cup, etc where matches are still a great spectacle.

Options available to people, regarding what to do with their free time, have increased many-fold with the advent of smart phones, laptops, internet  and loads of TV channels

Earlier, cricket was one of maybe 10 options and now it is one of maybe 100 options.

This is true to some extent however most of the time you could easily watch recorded series online. Where as a highlighted cricket game won’t bring you the same interest as a live cricket game.

The reason Cricket has fallen in popularity is because it failed to expand the game from the teams the world already has. Seeing the same teams face each other countlessly is not fun as more options to play is not availble.

Believe it or not its happening in India too . None of my younger nephews/niece like cricket , they cant name once Indian cricketer but for Virat . :(

found this happening across. its not cool to follow cricket at least in the cities among the kids ( the 'it' crowd), its a social norm to look down on cricket and have other interests like basketball or tennis not withstanding how crap you are at it. Often the best social acceptance is to follow english premier league and remember difficult south american/east european names of players (and their girl friends )and show recollection on what happened on last nights game or where the clubs stand ( even though one might have endured a pointless marathon mid night viewing of a game that has very little broad base following in ones own country) . Also arbidly support one of the top 2 clubs and act very committed to it, also fight and memorize slogans from internet and play fight other clubs similar 'fans' without having any idea on how club support develops though family in Europe.

This is a bit like the phenomena where a kid who finds it difficult to speak English otherwise has interest in rap songs and also sings with lots of errors and various nasal tones the same rap songs at times completely obliterating the already infantile literary meaning these rap songs have to offer in the first place, albeit in college song festivals/events etc and parents at times nasalizing their wards praise in person also share pics in 'whatsapp' even when you are several oceans away. I find such things rather amusing, and on occasions take the mickey out of them ( pun intended on the usage ;) )

I'd say that the soul of the game is slowly vanishing. Back in 90's there were even lesser teams, still so many wonderful memories we all have about cricket in that time, especially those quadrangular or tri-series Sharjah Cup!

As I mentioned in my previous post, apart from socialising with people, only television was the entertainment in India, I guess that holds true for Pakistan too. Now we have so many options for entertainment, that things which we valued so much in the past are losing their value today.

Nice write up. I loved reading your post. I would like to add more to it but before I do that I would like to ask you a question which I got after reading this post.

Lets say if India starts playing many other sports and they become popular. Do you think cricket will have a big market in India as it does now?

It will barring football, football has everything cricket has and has it more, except for the strategic element ( like chess) but thats of very little value to post-millennials gen-z with their multi dimensional entertainment/distraction dynamic , until they hit their 30's in a decade perhaps when they would like millennials dial back to more focused entertainment like say test cricket by choice at times. For those gen-x folks or borderline gen-x folks (advanced millennials)here all this is astounding since most of them are used to follow one or other hobby/interest substantially for entertainment.

@Vilander wrote a great long post, it gives a very accurate picture of present generation in India. If India starts becoming world class in football and Indian players get to play in Premier League, cricket in India would die on the spot. Even if India continues to fail at football, the fan following in cricket would still be on a gradual decline. I remember when Arsenal lost to Man United 2-8, the Arsenal fans in my hostel were overreacting, one guy cracked a harmless joke on Arsene Wenger after the loss and he was literally about to be beaten by Arsenal fans. That is the level of craze.

In India the elite class is giving up cricket , they think its more cool mto follow manchestar united rather than watching IPL, but on the other hand the lower  middle class and villages are embracing the game like never before

The watching on screen experience has improved.

Watch it at home on a huge tv sitting in your bed.

Or watch it on phone anywhere.

I used to make excuses for not going out on match days. Now I continue watching while I am driven. I can check the score anytime  even at parties.

There is so much more cricket to watch ,there is hardly any withdrawl problem....expect for ipl withdrawl. That leaves me feeling blue for a day or two.:p:
