UP’s anti-Romeo squad quieter now, thanks to IIM lessons

Firstly I would like to say that regardless whether you think anti-romeo squad is a good thing its application was such a mess.  A bunch of middle aged, poorly educated, misogynist as f@ck uncles  who probably have never had a romantic interaction were given the power to judge whether an interaction was consensual or forced. No wonder it transformed into some sort of morality police where every interaction with opposite sex was deemed liable for flogging. I mean who could have seen that coming ? You could even be forgiven to think that it was an intended consequence.

Secondly. I would question that whether a short course would actually work ? The folks joining the police arent the brightest individuals & their prejudices may still be intact. So i would still reserve my judgement on ARS.

Thirdly, the truth remains that people HATE interacting with the police. they percieve them as rude, unhelpful & insensetive so there is a need to train them. There is is a need for specialists from various fields to vcome together to draft a policy to train them better.

In our country consensual love in some places is less acceptable that rape.

If someone rapes...politicians of the yadavs category will call them boys making mistakes but if someone makes out under a bush, they are threatening out culture.

How about getting the police to catch  rapists and build solid cases against them so that they are actually pit behind bars for a long time instead of this drama.

I dont live in U.P. but from I've read in some areas situation was so bad girls didnt want to go to school becoz of harassment. So I don't mind the extra patrolling in those areas during certain times. But those measures should be accompanied by long term measures in tackling misogyny in those areas with help of NGOs, etc.

Simply focussing on band aid solutions like ARS v.1 instead further tarnishes the image of  police & people become more fearful of them which can infact deter the victims from reporting such crimes.

A generation of Police personnels are actually nothing but goons. The joined the force only and only paying kick backs. What do you expect from these guys. Same is true for various other departments. A very well established channel was in place under previous governments.

I dont know about current one, but previous government only hired people in government only through kickbacks apart from the years when they were in last year of their governance.

From what I've read Yogi discharged / transferred a lot of policemen & cracked a whip on non-performers. The result was that reporting of crimes increased by multiples d/t officers actually filling the FIRs. Obviously its not ideal as the police need large scale reforms throughout the country. I think India has among the least amount of police per 1000 people. They are also poorly paid & over worked. Not to mention corrupt & just a tool of politicians.

As I've said though policing is just one issue there also needs to be several other steps taken in addition to resolve the crisis in UP at the same time. Whether Yogi & his govt. has the will to do so only time will tell.
