Worst possible result which India can achieve in overseas tours and still maintain #1 Test rank?

Recommended Posts

So within next 12 months or so we have

3 Tests in south Africa

5 tests in England

3Tests at home vs WI

4 Tests in Australia

my question is that what is the worst possible result we can achieve in these 12 overseas Tests but which will still guarantee the hold on the test ranking?

obviously ideal would be to remain unbeaten in two and Nick a win in one of the series (England or SA). But failing that what are the permutations and combinations

keep in mind the WI home series will be absolutely pointless where unless we whitewash them it might end up hurting our points

Dunno about England, Aus tours. But if we lose to SA 0-3, we will still remain world no 1 (by decimal points) if Aus can lose by a margin of 1 test (0-1 or 1-2) when they tour SA in March 2018. If Aussies draw or win the series we will have a decent cushion (around 3-5 points) over no 2. At least we won't immediately lose no 1 spot even if we get whitewashed in SA. All boils down to how we do in England. England will have lost lots of points by then, so even a narrow series win there may cost us points....we really need to beat them 3-1/2-0 style to maintain the top spot.

Negative thought. I am ready to lose our #1 ranking if it means we win at least 1 test match in each of the 3 away tours or get a series win in one of them

Exactly! It hurts a lot that being the fans of the most richest cricket team, the last two major away wins were 3 and 7 years ago.

The last wins in each away countries (outside SC) are:

2014 Lords (England)

2010 Durban (South Africa)

2009 Hamilton (New Zealand)

2008 Perth (Australia)

Its pathetic to sy the least tbf.

Ps: Don't care about T20/ODIs or minnows like WI/ZIM

I believe we have a good chance of getting at least one victory in South Africa and a series win in England.. Australia will be a tough nut to crack but if our batters remain in form we should be able to draw the series.. let's hope our batting line up delivers consistently in SA as that will give the bowlers a cushion and also confidence to go all out.
