And he is not out of form currently.

His game is suited to the bouncy pitches of SA.

But we hear that he won't play in SA in the test matches    !!

How ridiculous  !

Tbh I doubt they even give a **** about the rankings and even his average (both of which are higher than Vijay and Dhawan). The narrative is all about Rahul failing to convert his 50s with Dhawan being undroppable after getting big runs. The fact that KLR got his runs on tougher wickets against a much better attack is irrelevant apparently.

How ridiculous? It makes the selection of the 90s cricketers [pick your favourite] look positively meaningful in comparison. Our best opener in recent times form-wise and probably quality-wise is discarded.

Because Dhawan happens to be in "good form" and also the jigri Dilli da yaar of Kuptaan Wrogn.

But stay tuned folks, we are shortly going to find out in this thread, that this is somehow that evil Dhoni's fault.

Of course it is Evil Dhoni's fault. It was under the Dhoni that Dhawan made his debut and struck that 187. If not for the evil genius of MSD, we would have happily had KLR and Vijay opening. [sarcasm].

Rankings show consistency in performance over a period of time and should not be ignored.

Unless it is a case of including or excluding a player due to his suitability or otherwise to the pitch / playing conditions, it is difficult to fathom ignoring this parameter ( and Rahul is more suited to batting in SA than Dhawan ).

Ability to perform  in more difficult conditions / against better opponents  is obviously another parameter.

true. and given that KLR is much better in these respects, it's very strange. If he's not married, he should marry a British woman and play for England instead of Stoneman/Cook.

All of this is true but we're talking about a management/captain that has made similar farcical decisions in the past in Tests and is continuing to make them in LOIs. I guess we need to adjust our expectations accordingly.

It's hard to adjust one's expectations despite the ongoing farces when one sees genuine contenders deserving of a longer run.

I think management mesmerised by Dhawan in odis . Batted great in England in ct . Then did well in home games

they are confused . From inside they can’t see what see from outside that as soon as faced with test matches away in certain countries his technique will be exposed v short ball and movement .

Dhawan does look good ( bradman like ) but we all know he won’t be able to cope when heat is on is sa

Given that this "think tank" benched Pujara for Raina, Dhawan getting in at the cost of Rahul should come as no surprise at all. Applying the same standards that were applied to Rahul, Kohli should have been dropped for 5-6 series after his abject failure in the series against Australia. Instead, he promptly walked back in to the team and helped himself to cheap runs against feeble opposition.

He is 3rd best ranked Indian batsman.

On the basis of his performance, not just talent, he would get into any team in the world.

In the past we had captains dropping decent to average performers for worse players.

However this is probably first time when a proven performer and one of the best batsman would be dropped. Has anything like this has ever happened before.
