Amazing cause, finally some good news from Africa @zen

A Great Green Wall 8000 km long, stretching across the entire continent, >20 countries have joined hands to make this a reality. About time too because the Sahara-Sahel region is undergoing rapid desertification, this initiative will go a long way towards combating the menace of land degradation. This could be the new wonder of the world once completed, World Bank, UN and African Union among others have pledged their support to this mission. Already a lot of development has taken place, Senegal's portion will be completed very soon. Focus on drought resistant varieties and those whose roots can store water eg Acacia.

Results have already started showing especially in Senegal and Burkina Faso: wells that were devoid of water so long are now filled to the brim and helping irrigation too apart from domestic use, humidity up in the previously bone dry regions, a new economy around this wall rising, food security, people no longer migrating to Europe and other richer pastures........  If this is a success other continents including Asia can try to work along similar lines.

Well done Africa :hatsoff:

Take note India.

Finally some good news from Africa. Every time you pick up news of Africa, it's all about coup somewhere, civil wars, trophy hunting & poaching of animals, drought, major powers in the world tricking poor African people from their resources etc.

This wall would definitely bring relief to the millions of African people.

From Morocco to Egypt & Algeria to South Africa, this continent has a lot of possibilities to bring a positive change.

+terrorism. People may not know but more people have died due to radical Islamic terror in Africa in these last 10 years than even West Asia. Boko Haram has killed more people than IS+AQ combined. Al Shabaab is another major terror group. This great initiative will pass through many countries under the pump from these Islamist groups. Hope there is all round development, less migration, greater prosperity so that the younger generation doesn't fall easy prey to the fanatical masterminds behind the instability in this region.

Great initiative! Once the project is completed it would be another wonder of the world in Africa

Though Africa has quite a few challenges including being at the cusp of potential population explosion that it would need to keep an eye on or it could negatively impact environment including through generation of plastic waste

Ind too would have to learn to not get too carried away by the talks of economic development at the cost of environment / planet. It is ok to be relatively poor but live in a healthy, clean and green environment than breathing fumes, drinking sewage and creating garbage so everyone for eg owns a car, which could become unnecessary with better public transport

With the population burden Ind has, it will not be able to compete on per capita based metrics. Best way is to use and pool the resources to improve the quality of life by decreasing / controlling population, offering free basic education and medical services, focusing on sustainability to drive growth, keeping planet first at all times, etc

The best thing about this initiative is so many countries working together to make it a success. Africa is not a Europe, these countries are always fighting each other and within. Clashes on the basis of ethnicity, religion, tribe, clan etc are so common and not a day goes by without hearing about some tussle/violence between neighbors in this part of the world. May be the impending gloom of desertification has united these warring entities to get into synergy at least on the environmental front. If and when this project becomes a success may be it will be time for South America and Asia to follow Africa's lead.

We have so many platforms to mingle and interact with our neighbors and East and South East Asian countries, yet environment is hardly ever a topic of discussion. These poverty stricken, famine hit African nations have understood that environmental success will eventually lead to economic and social prosperity, when will we learn? Modi sarkar is defanging all environment related organisations and institutions, running a smear campaign against pro environment groups and bypassing the checks and balances imposed by environmentalists in the pursuit of economic development, time to take a leaf out of Africa's book before it is too late.

MoEFCC is the most underfunded ministry in India, after all other expenditures are taken care off kuch chillar bache toh bheekh me dete hai is ministry ko, this attitude will eventually lead to India's downfall. Environmental issues are never discussed in the legislature, environmental policy is updated once in 2 decades, NGT is subdued, environment related schemes are a rarity....... I wish one day MoEFCC is a cabinet ranked position at par with Home Ministry, External Affairs Ministry and Defence Ministry. I dream of a day when lawmakers debate environment related topics and give maximum importance to safeguarding not just the forests but also the tribals who inhabit these areas, India's natural history and beauty is no less than her glorious history and cultural beauty.

That is what needs to be developed. USA has a population of 300M. If a country with a population on 1.3B starts to consume like the USA, which is what many in Ind dream of, it would create havoc. If per capita car consumption is like US, it would be hard to even drive on the roads so the development of a world class public transport system is a priority

Ind needs to change many of its priorities

True. And all this aping of the US needs to stop. While the US has done many things correctly, it has also handled some issues very badly. moreover, it's not just the fact that india's population is 4 times larger but also that its area is about 3 times smaller. hence, the congestion from private transport is massive - I've seen a lot of it in Bengaluru and Hyd.
