he was amongst top 5-6 runscores in List A this season - got selected based on recent form alone. Yes, there are 4-5 batsmen better than him this season, of which Klaasen is one and he is in the team. Zondo is clearly a quota selection since Farhaan should have been selected - did great in List A, much better batsman and useful bowler too.

Some of the quota guys have been pretty good

 

Rabada is a star,

 

Lungi, Bavuma are adequate

 

Beherdein is ok for T20 slog fests

Lungi is more than adequate for Tests in SA I think. Farhaan is quite good for ODIs too, since he can bowl a bit (scores at nearly 100 SR and 30+ avg). Phelunkayo IMO is quite ordinary although his Test stats are highly inflated. Of the people who have played, I rate Zondo the worst followed by Bavuma.

When the next best gora batsmen in line is Klassen, don't think we can blame the quota system. South Africa just don't have deep talent reserves.

That’s a good point...dare I say looked worse than Zondo with the bat...atleast Zondos defense was okayish....However atleast Klassen guy is a keeper where as Zondo just doesn’t add anything...also dropped a catch in the first odi...out and out quota pick

How can you blame Klaasen when almost all of their players are failing against the spin? I agree Zondo is the worst quota pick ever. He was in 2 years ago too against India but didn't play him because his average was in sub 20s which might have resulted in backlash.

Harmer, Stiaan Van Zyl, Dane Piedt, Temba Bavuma all came to India for test series in 2015. Harmer signed as a Kolpak player,  Bavuma still isn't guaranteed in the playing eleven & Van Zyl, Piedt are not even in their plans for now.

Ingram signed as a Kolpak player few years back. 

Merchant De Lange has been forgotten too. He was lucky to be picked in IPL because of a match winning performance at the time of the auctions. Hasn't played international cricket since 2016.
