The millions Australia's disgraced cricketers stand to lose

The lavish rock-star lifestyles of Australia's top cricket stars could be an unexpected casualty of the ball-tampering scandal engulfing the sport.

Australian team leaders Steve Smith and David Warner have stood down from the captain and vice-captain roles of the national team after rookie Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera meddling with the game ball.

Both collect massive paychecks through their performance on the field and endorsements off it, but this could now be jeopardised.

Griffith University's Dr Caroline Riot studies the mindset of elite athletes, and said she believed the multi-million dollar salaries could go to their heads.

"You know they live a great lifestyle, they are driving their Lamborghinis and living it up," she told A Current Affair.

However, she said they were "probably not" in touch with reality.

Smith and Warner both earn more than the highest-paid player in the AFL and in the NRL - combined.

Cricket Australia will announce tomorrow what punishments the players will receive.

Celebrity agent Max Markson said whatever the official consequences, both players could expect to lose millions in endorsements.

"It's just a line in the sand, corporations and companies can't be associated with cheaters," he said.

"They will lose every contract they have got. Every contract has a moral clause in it and they've breached their moral clause."

Dr Riot believes the path to redemption for Smith and Warner will lie on "bringing them back to earth".

"Get them back into volunteering or working at the community levels of sport," she said.

in all honesty i think the money they earn is theirs to spend and they earnt it based on the market for their ability. But there are others who make more who did not cheat may such examples from India and England in cricket, many examples from other big sports liek football/Tennis were salaries are even more riddiculous by an order of magnitude biggger ( EU Footbal, American NFL/NBA). Super starts dont cheat automatically. But this is shocking that a test captain and VC would do institutional cheating.

Is George Bailey still playing FC ?  will he be next captain ?

If that happens I will buy the theory that Aussies are going the Srilankan way like one of the thread said on ICF...how the hell this did guy captain Australia was a big mystery to me....Thanks to this ball tampering issue this piece of history has slid further down the ranking of Australia’s most disgraceful moments.

Srilankan way

You mean merry go round of senior players as captains? Or lack of skilled captains?  I don't think he is that bad a bit like England's Collingwood. At a time such as this a journeyman captain is what you need to take some pressure off.
