Cummins has had a long history of back troubles but **there is hope at Cricket Australia that the move to pull him out of the IPL is largely precautionary.**

The 24-year-old may now be in doubt for Australia’s one-day tour of England in June but medical staff are hopeful scans will indicate this latest setback is not long-term.

Australia’s next Test series isn’t until October against Pakistan in the UAE and then the next big assignment is India in the home summer.

Since playing his debut Test match way back in 2011, it wasn’t until last year that Cummins made his long-awaited return to the baggy green.

From there he played 13 straight Test matches, including nine consecutive Tests over an arduous summer.

Cricket Australia officials privately didn’t think Cummins would get through a full Ashes summer and were buoyed by the strength of his body.

Cummins was by far the standout player for Australia on a disappointing tour of South Africa and stepped up in a time of crisis with some match-changing spells.

The NSW star has even been projected as a potential vice-captaincy option for Australia following the leadership vacuum caused by suspensions to Steve Smith and David Warner.

It’s understood Cummins has been withdrawn from the IPL to prioritise his Australian future.

Australia can ill-afford to lose Cummins for a long period, although they may feel a one-day series in England in June is not worth the risk.

Mitchell Starc had already been ruled out of the IPL with a leg injury and Mitchell Marsh has also been sidelined as he awaits ankle surgery.

With Smith and Warner gone, Australia need to make sure they can keep their ace bowling attack on the park.

Seriously tough for these fast bowlers.
