The Cauvery water dispute has forced the BCCI to shift Chennai Super Kings' remaining home games to Pune as the state administration expressed inability to ensure adequate security arrangements for the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

"The matches had to be shifted out of Chennai as police had said that they were unable to provide security in the prevailing situation. CSK is not averse to shifting base to Pune," IPL Chairman Rajv Shukla said.

There were already calls by various groups not to host cricket matches in Chennai when the state was facing such a grave situation.

Massive protests were witnessed yesterday ahead of the match between CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders and an identified protestor flung a shoe at CSK's Ravindra Jadeja during the match.

The BCCI had short-listed four cities to host matches but eventually Pune was finalised since CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is familiar with the conditions having played two seasons with Rising Pune Supergiants.

Shukla had also spoken to the Union Home Secretary on Tuesday, seeking government intervention in smooth conduct of IPL matches in Chennai.

Committee of Administrator (CoA) chief Vinod Rai had earlier told PTI that the prevailing situation has forced them to explore options and they had kept four alternative venues ready. Apart from Pune, Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, and Rajkot were selected as stand-by venues.

Asked why Pune was selected, an IPL source said that captain Dhoni knows the conditions well and logistically it made sense to have Pune as the new venue instead of Visakhapatnam.

"There are only a few direct flights available from Vizag. If the team has to travel to Indore, then they had to reach Indore via Delhi. Pune has better connectivity, so it was decided that CSK shift base to Pune," the source said.

Meanwhile, an official from the Maharashtra Cricket Association said they are ready to host matches.

"We were in touch with BCCI as well franchise officials. We are prepared for the challenge as the match is to be hosted in a just few days," said the official who did not wish to be quoted.

The organisers have a few days to put arrangements in place as CSK play their next home game on April 20 against Rajasthan Royals.

IPL's most popular franchise CSK has made a comeback to the league after serving two-year suspension for its role in the 2013-spot fixing scandal in 2013.

lol @ No direct flights from Vizag to Indore

I guess its a right thing to do... when police themselves say that they cannot provide protection against the activists...you gotta accept that situation is *ed up... Players and fans cannot be put to risk...

Kiss the trophy goodbye...the mafia is going to use all its power to * CSK in West and North...

On the brighter side, now that its in Pune... I might be able to go for a match or two

Now... Is the Kaveri issue solved ? This is what happens when sensible people don't enter politics and leave it to filth to run the country..... ... If there was any sensible politician in Tamil Nadu, they will spend Bill $'s to have NASA build its rain generator in TN for its farmers.... Solve problems through technology....... A very bad day for the business community in TN.... Basically, a CORP was pushed out of Chennai , due to social sentiment.... how does bore well for any MNC looking to setup anywhere in India ?

Bad day for Chennai, unfortunate. But i guess farmer suicides and livelihood trumps cricket and general good times i guess. Karnataka and india have decided to not follow riparian state norms, TN needs to invest in desalination or risk not having alluvial soil under irrigation.

Pretty sure not many in Chennai would be too bothered by it, they would just ruse and move on with their work in a very particular middle class working class sort of way and still not elect a good polititian and vote for Kamal, rajini, vijayakanth, vishal, kushboo, sarathkumar etc..not for a movie award or something but for different levels of civic body elections that is. Because in TN you need to be actor first to become a politician, thats the way we roll..we vote actors to be CM,all ministers..either actos or goons..preferably both and drunk.

there is not enough water for everone ..

in bhavani river basin , farmers are not happy to share their water for delta farmers ..

there are issues in sharing even lake water between two villages in many places .. politicans can keep using this unsolvable issue  forever

thats a good point of view to have, i am from bangalore ( like my cauvery water if and when i decide to live there) but from a national outlook alluvial soil needs to be irrigated , may be nationalizing river basins and having river consortium or board based  governance could be a better model, every dependent state provides resources and taxes and avails produce, farmers would be safer that way.
