Punjab’s Congress Govt Asks SC to Uphold Conviction of Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu

The Punjab government on Thursday told the Supreme Court that its own minister Navjot Singh Sidhu should serve three years in jail in a 30-year-old road rage case as ordered by the Punjab and Haryana high court.

Sidhu had hit Gurnam Singh, 65, on the head during an argument on a road in Patiala on December 27, 1988. Singh had died in hospital of a haemorrhage.

The high court had held Sidhu guilty and sentenced him to three years in jail in 2006, but the Supreme Court had suspended the sentence a year later and granted him bail, allowing him to contest elections.

The Congress government in Punjab asked the Supreme Court to uphold Sidhu's conviction and set aside the bail, saying that the HC verdict was correct.

Counsel for Punjab government told a bench of Justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul that Gurnam Singh had died of brain hemorrhage, and not cardiac arrest, after being struck by Sidhu.

“There is not a single evidence that suggest that the cause of death was cardiac arrest and not brain hemorrhage. The trial court verdict was rightly set aside by the High Court. Sidhu had given a fiesty blow to deceased Gurnam Singh leading to his death through brain hemorrhage," the state government counsel told the bench.

Punjab Congress leaders backed the counsel’s stand, saying that the state prosecution had taken this position in the Punjab & Haryana High Court and could not back out now.

“The state government followed the rule of the law in the Supreme Court and has left the apex court to judge the matter on merit,” a party leader said.

Drawing a contrast to UP, where the Yogi Adityanath government is facing accusations of shielding MLA Kuldeep Singh in a rape case, he said that the Congress government has upheld the law of the land in this case, as it has done in every case since taking charge in Punjab.

“Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has always maintained that his government will strictly uphold the law and will not interfere in judicial matters. The same principle was stringently adhered to, in the present case,” he said.

Amarinder is smart man ,He is removing a thorn which will hurt his family in future.

His useless children are not so popular.and He is 76 year old , by the end of his term he will be 80.

Sidhu's eyes were always on CM post

Irrespective of whether he is doing this because of selfish reasons or not, this is a good move. In any civilized country Sidhu would have been behind bars, not hosting IPL match shows/judging laughter challenges or the usual political roadshows.

Mike tyson barely spent 2 years 11 months behind bars for Rape.At max Sidhu will serve few months  to 1.5 years in jail and then he can resume career in IPL match shows , laughter challenges etcetc . Don't know how much it will hurt his political ambitions

It’ll hurt. He wants to become Punjab CM after Captain... this has screwed up his plans...

If he goes to jail, he won’t stay in Congress for long...

Meanwhile BJP is :hehe: on Sidhu..,

You have read up oj Simpson case, there many others like that just get a good lawyer who will pick jury and just confuse them enough to not vote against. Even celebrities   steal stuff from stores but get jailed at home.

OJ Simpson is literally penniless from all that legal drama...Yeah age old story of a rich and famous guy who got away with "murder" but it had it's consequences....Mike Tyson's career was over after that rape conviction and again no longer had the wealth he had in his prime.

However what consequences have serial offenders like Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt suffered?

since those 30 years,Sidhu enjoyed a somewhat successful cricket career, became a personality, infact developed a lovable persona and has had a somewhat successful political career.

I used to admire Siddhu as a guy who had a lot of integrity be it on the cricket field or as politician regardless of his clownish persona in the media....his recent shennanigans and statements like  "Rahul Bhai(Rahul Gandhi) is a great leader or something in that context or as his bootlicking statements about Sonia and Congress,I have lost all respect for him....I need compensation for all those awkward and uncomfortable silence I maintained during his idiotic, irritating and annoying laughter because I thought he was a "good guy" but now he is a certified A Grade moron
