Very big tribe in terms of numbers, I think only durranis(mostly in southern Afghanistan) and yusufzais are larger in numbers , Influential yes in South KPK, yusufzais more so in north kpk, Afridi are not a huge tribe but big enough. Afridis are historically a popular tribe having risen up in rebellion multiple times against Mughals and English. Yes Durranis are from Afghanistan. Salim Durrani who played for India was born in Afghan land if I'm not wrong. Very hard and Sturdy people Pashtuns are. Quite resilient and proud of themselves. What are your views on their origins? It would be nice if you don't troll for a change and not label them as some lost Judean tribe. IMO they were Buddhists/Hindus and descendents of original Aryans who came from Central Asia. Rigveda was written in the region around KPK and thus it's possible that many got permanently settled around that area. Also the kingdom of Gandhara(Modern day Afghanistan) has a good part to play in the Mahabharata as well . Muslim historians described Pashtuns as savage pagans lol, so yh defiantly idol worshippers before Islam, as for migrating to Kpk that only happened once the Turk kings started Invading India so 10th century or so. Speaking of, Turks weren't exactly big fans of Afghans/Pashtuns and looked down upon them, esp in the early 200 years. They were clubbed together with the rest of Indian Muslims and were mainly suited for lower rung jobs. Their fortunes reversed as Khaljis came to power and held a good sway around Delhi till the time of SherShah. I see a lot of similarities among Pashtuns and Rajputs. Both were divided among many tribes/clans who constantly fought against each other for petty reasons and thus were rarely able to put up a combine defence against the incoming Invaders. Both also were mercenaries at best and didn't have acumen to rule over big empires.

Pashtuns invaded India as mercenaries in Turk armies and gradually started to settle in Kpk, KPK is actually Indian land and even today many Indic people live In KPK they are known as Hindowkans they speak Hindko. Actually when Mahmoud Ghaznavi Invaded India his army was made up of slave soldiers, Turks and Hindus And mercenaries Afghans, Intrestingly his army had both Muslim and Hindu/ Buddhist Afghans. Afghans had always been Indic. They were part of Vedic civilization and centre of Buddhism later on under the Kushanas and Sakas. It's only after islamization and coming of Turks that the gulf between the societies widened though not much. Brave people though. Gotta respect that even though the IQ levels might not Cross two digits. Alam_dar

People think that when pashtuns were Buddhist they were like what you expect tree hugging Buddhist, but pashtuns were always war like regardless of the religion they followed since as far back as the white Huns time. Nobody said all Buddhists were tree hugging hermits. You need to read on their History in China and the various Martial techniques which originated in the monasteries.
