Gollum
Basically Salwa Judum was a militia formed by the Chattisgarh Government in 2005 to fight the Naxalites in the state, especially in the Dandakaranya forest region. The militia consisted of tribal youth who were on our side and had been wronged by the Naxals, these guys rejected the ideology of the left wing extremists and wanted to uproot the menace to usher in development in the region. You remember the Naxal attack on the Congress convoy in 2013 right? 30 odd people were killed in Sukma including senior Congress leaders. The main target of the insurgents was Mahendra Karma, ex Congress minister in Chattisgarh govt. Mahendra Karma was the one who formed the Salwa Judum movement to fight Naxals. He was also called 'Bastar ka Sher' because of his daring acts against the extremists. He himself was an adivasi whose family members were all killed by the Maoists when he was a young man. So he dedicated his life to ending the militancy and recruited tribals and gave them arms/training, this was the birth of Salwa Judum. This group had tremendous success in its operations because these tribals understood the jungle very well. To cut the long story short, the SC declared Salwa Judum as illegal and ordered its disbanding. Reasons given by SC included human rights violations, poor training, criminal activities, recruitment of child soldiers, state sponsoring of militias etc. Ofc many of these reasons were slightly exaggerated but kya karein, SC ka order tha, the Chattisgarh govt had to recover all the arms/ammunition and suspend training. After this move many Salwa Judum members were picked one by one by the Maoists and killed. They also had to flee Chattisgarh because now they were unarmed and stopped receiving government support. In 2013 the Maoists also assassinated 'Bastar ka Sher' in the convoy attack, quite brutally (stabbed 78 times, bones broken, eyes and eardrums gouged out....) in fact and his body was badly mutilated. In spite of him being a Congressman Karma was respected by BJP (his action's had Raman Singh's approval) , he was even given Z+ security by the govt (his death had many conspiracy theories at that time) . After his death, former members of Salwa Judum regrouped and formed Salwa Judum 2.0 (banner Vikas Sangharsh Samiti) spearheaded by Karma's son Chavindra Karma, another Congress leader who lost the 2014 elections in Dantewada. Don't know the exact status but SC (also commies, libtards, usual suspects) has made its displeasure known. Your opinion? Do you support such a militia or do you think SC is right? Whatever your opinion I think Mahendra Karma deserves some respect for what he did. On May 25 this year it will be exactly 5 years since he was assassinated. Turning_track
The locals understood the terrain well but the CG govt stopped helping them after SC's order & how could the villagers fight the AK-47 wielding Maoists with bow & arrow. Young, well trained CoBRA commandos of CRPF have eliminated lot of top rated Naxalites & forced many of them to surrender. In desperation Maoists have resorted to killing innocent civilians & contractors who are responsible for road projects. A few days back a contractor from Hyderabad was murdered. What was his fault? He was merely doing the work for which he'd have been paid by the govt later. I absolutely detest Binayak Sen & his wife who in the media pass off as benevolent people helping the tribals, but in reality Sen is just a Maoist postman. Dont know about the status of his ongoing trial in Bilaspur high court. Also JNU, DU are hubs of indoctrination for this movement. Last year a DU professor was awarded life sentence too for these activities. Warangal polytechnic at one point of time was infamous due to its graduates joining the fight against Indian establishment. But what is your opinion on Salwa Judum? Do you support such state sponsored militia or do you agree with SC judgement? What is your opinion about the late Mahendra Karma? State sponsored militia could eventually make way for secession movements where the state armies can fight against the national army regiments! So, use them to resolve whatever issues with Maoists etc. and disband them as soon as they become obsolete. UrmiSinhaRay

Do you support such state sponsored militia or do you agree with SC judgement? What is your opinion about the late Mahendra Karma? Its a very complicated issue, in 2005-06 then it seemed right because it was need of the hour. During the time it started, villagers of more than 200 villagers came together upset with Maoist call on collection of Tendu leaves & opposition to development work. After initial weapons training & appointment of SPOs by CG govt, it got success but also lead to the displacement of thousands of people. The naxalites then eliminated lots of them one by one just bcoz they joined Judum & spread more terror in the surrounding areas by making an example. The govt backtracked after it became such an issue, those people who fought then paid with their lives. Those who picked up the gun & are now living under false aliases somewhere else, won't even trust the govt again. The state govt should have been more relentless in their approach & helped the foot soldier who was fighting at the front by providing him more resources. Once the case went to the SC, the writing was on the wall. The court gave deemed it as illegal & ask the govt. to recover all firearms from Salwa Judum members. SC just gave a long lecture on morality, constitutional measures & all that stuff. But didn't say anything about the solution of this conflict. There were talks about deployment of army in that zone during UPA. But thinking about civilian population in that area the idea was dropped. Karma was a brave man whom tribals trusted. His family and many others have been on the hitlist of Naxalites since many decades because they genuinely tried to help. Stradlater
I still am of firm belief that if the Govt wants they can cleanse the entire red Corridor off naxalites in a month. I dont buy the terrain theory. Give them COBRAs a free hand and wait and watch. Straight Drive, AuxiliA, UrmiSinhaRay and 1 other 1
Gollum
6 years later another MLA in Chhattisgarh is killed in a Maoist attack, 4 security personnel dead . Respect to the fallen and condolences to their near and dear ones. Wish Karma were alive, he would have been a fit CM under present circumstances, a true nationalist who was taken away too soon. Congress needs leaders like him and Captain Amarinder Singh right now. More than Congress, India needs such people in positions of power.
