BCCI, CoA spar over speaker for Pataudi lecture

May 13 2018

The administrators at the CoA and BCCI continue to differ over key matters.

The BCCI office-bearers and the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) continue to differ on key matters. This time, the issue is over the speaker for the prestigious MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture.

In a novel move, the CoA has decided on former Lankan great Kumar Sangakkarato speak at the lecture, which is delivered on the night of the BCCI's annual awards, but the decision isn't cutting ice with acting BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary, who feels that former Indian cricketers who played alongside the man famously called 'Tiger Pataudi' would be more apt for the occasion.

Choudhary has proposed that one of Pataudi's teammates, Nari Contractor, Chandu Borde, Erapalli Prasanna and Abbas Ali Baig should be invited as the speaker. In an e-mail (a copy is with TOI) to CoA chief Vinod Rai, Choudhary has asked the committee to reconsider the decision and said that he is unable to agree to the proposal of the committee unless the ones named by him "are disqualified for other reasons."

He concludes his e-mail by saying that "as in the past on any occasions, if overruled, he will have no option but to go with the decision of the COA." In his e-mail on Saturday, Amitabh wrote: "When the matter was discussed with me at Bangalore a couple of days ago I had suggested we also look for probable speakers among distinguished cricketers of yesteryears such as Nari Contractor, Chandu Borde, Erapalli Prasanna and Abbas Ali Baig. These cricketers have even the distinction of having played alongside Tiger Pataudi and if any of them agrees, it could provide the much needed perspective on how cricket has evolved from those years of challenge.

Nari was the captain of the touring Indian team to West Indies when he was struck by a bouncer and the brave man faced it all. This had resulted in Tiger taking over as the youngest ever Test captain having to lead a team of stalwarts such as Manjrekar, Borde, Nadkarni, Jaishima and Umrigar."

Wth .....why is this egomaniac Vinod rai getting to decide these matters?

Talk about power going to ones head.

If only bcci had not been more transparent and accountable, these  people would not be making a mockery of Indian cricket.

Wth...why does this clown think Sangakkara is better to give a lecture to Indian cricketers than our own ex players?

Hope someone puts this big ego in place.

No....don't say mama. Keep the crook away .....

LOL Those who played with Pataudi are well over 75, they may even be dead in a few year's time. They played alongside him, they should be allowed to speak, not some 40 year old Lankan who has no association with Indian cricket. Once Pataudi's close friends (Indian or foreign) are all given the honour, may be after 10 years we can call in international stars or modern era Indian stars. Bedi is someone who was mentored by MAK, he is still very close to Sharmila and regularly attends events in Pataudi and those organized by MAK's family. Not just was Bedi a close friend of MAK, he is also the conscience of Indian cricket and a genuine well wisher of our players without any malice or favoritism. Why can't the legend be given the honor? Or for that matter even the likes of Ian Chappell, Doug Walters, Lloyd etc.

Vinod Rai, the less said the better. This guy is so ineffective that I am seriously even considering to forgive Congress for 2G, CoalGate and other UPA era scams unearthed when he was CAG. This clown has a serious mental problem, don't even think he is in the real world.

Btw Sanga is quite a well known motivational speaker these days, also does corporate events, maybe that's why they chose him at first place, but COA is bang on, if the event is held for Pataudi then someone who has played along with him should do a eulogy.

Picking Petersen is not a big deal. The issue is who gave COA the authority to do that. Bunch of arrogants power grabbers. Nazis.

Supreme Court appointed them to supervise the BCCI officials. But instead of overseeing the activities they are bossing. It's common and one has to deal with it. The ones with power will take things in their hands. The powerful will survive.

That is the root cause of all the problems. Their job was to implement reform only and not meddle in day to day running of BCCI. Supreme Court should be ashamed of itself for forcing this thug entity of COA on BCCI.

Once you hand power , then most people will use it. Sometimes more than they should. Even BCCI officials have used more power. So nobody is saint. Currently CoA has that power and they are using it. You play the game the way it is. it's not that you do whatever you want and expect others to operate in boundaries.

Why should SC be ashamed. Betting is still illegal in India. Court had to interfere.

First thing. Betting should be made legal in India. This holy mantle of not betting and being the most corrupt country in the world does not go hand in hand. That way government can tax the  earnings too.

Getting back to COA their job was only to implement Lodha reform. Now they are power drunk. Nazis. Thugs and what not.

As i said before in the game of power nobody is saint. BCCI have to face the tough times and rule when they get the power back. Cribbing like kids should stop. Wait for your time to rule.
