Who would you say has been the most impressive Indian fast bowler this IPL?

Recommended Posts

Bumrah despite having few bad games actually has a very impressive economy rate this season...his economy rate this season is less than 7..it's around 6.75 something...which is brilliant considering how he bowls majority of his overs during final 8 overs of the game

As I said in my earlier post, Shami was under mental pressure in SA due to ongoing tensions with his wife.  His performance there is not a reflection of his normal ability.

As for England, in recent times, the ball does not swing all the time. Additionally,  many of pitches become abrasive after 2 or 3 days. Spinners have done better. We saw in the Lords test we played last time that it was a green top for 2 days and needed hit-the-deck bowling in the last 2 or 3 days.

We can't afford to have 2 pacers who can look threatening ONLY IF the ball swings. We have Bhuvi for that. Umesh is an outswing  bowler too, who can perform with the old ball also.

1. Rahul

2. Vijay

3. Pujara

4. Kohli

5. Rahane

6. Ashwin

7. Saha

8. Bhuvi

9. Umesh

10. Shami / Saini  **

11. Bumrah

This would be my playing 11.

Saini would play if Shami is mentally not focused.

Hopeful that Kohli has learnt lessons from SA tour. 4 Pacers (Bhuvi can bat)+ Aswin is better than 3 Pacers + Ashwin+ Pandya.

I would have Dhawan as back up for both middle order and opening batsman. Think he has improved his test game a bit from SA tour.

What your opinion on Rahul as No. 3 ??

In case Pujara fails terribly, Dhawan, Vijay, Rahul,Kohli, Rahane??

Rahul at No.3 can definitely work.

But can Dhawan open in England ?

Dhawan has improved his game a lot against pace and bounce. He is cutting and pulling the ball fiercely these days.

But his off-stump game is still weak, especially if the ball is moving.

And we have somehow failed to develop any other promising test batter for the middle order, because Rohit kept on getting chances.

As it stands today ... if Pujara fails,  Dhawan in the middle order maybe our only option.

I've lost confidence in Pujara for overseas tests. If some other top order batter is in good form around that time, I'd pick him in place of Pujara.

Your point is valid but who do you have in mind as a potentially better replacement  ?

I'd also pick Pandya as the 4th pacer.

I got the impression in SA  that out pace attack looked much more potent when we played 4 specialist quicks.

As of today, Pandya is not that consistent as a test batsman to overturn the above factor.

Bumrah is not in top wicket taker list this IPL, however he has done the containing job excellently  in most matches for MI. A bowler who is not able to take wickets in bulk like Tye, Rashid etc should atleast be able to choke runs, which is what Bumrah did when wickets were tough to take.

If he manages to pick wickets as well as choke runs then he will be considered as T20 top class bowler like Tye, Narine, Rashid. One day he will be there , i hope so.

T20 is a format which assumes importance in international cricket only in World T20s, which will generally be held once in 4 years. It is a format destined for franchise based cricket.

From an India-fan point of view, I hope Bumrah and other budding quick bowlers do not become  top T20 bowlers. This is because the qualities that make a pacer really good in T20s  ( like too many slower balls and variations )  often make a pacer lose his ability to take wickets in tests and ODIs.

T20Is can do with specialist seamers developed specifically for this format.
