I get emotional whenever I think of Gambhir's role in my career: Navdeep Saini

"Gautam bhaiya told me 'Jaise tennis ball se dalta hai, waise hi dal. Koi tension nahi. Baaki sab theek ho jayega (Just bowl like you bowl with a tennis ball. Everything will fall in place)'. I did what he told me and today I am here because of him. I don't know whenever I speak about Gautam Gambhir, I get emotional," an elated Saini told PTI after receiving his maiden call-up to the Indian senior team for the Afghanistan Test.

Saini had managed to impress the key Delhi player and sneaked into the Delhi Ranji team despite initial resistance from the officials, who considered him an outsider from Haryana.

Gambhir after watching him bowl for 15 minutes had decided that Saini was a rare talent, who should be groomed properly.

There were people who witnessed how Gambhir literally lost his cool during the net session when despite his repeated insistence, a Delhi selector (a distinguished former India opener) didn't even make a passing glance at Saini's bowling.

However, known for being stubborn, Gambhir got him into the team despite revolt from a notorious section of DDCA officials, who had distributed pamphlets, questioning Saini's eligibility, when he was marking his run-up for his first ever over in Ranji against Vidarbha.

"I remember every tiny little thing. I know what Gautam bhaiya had to go through to convince selectors that I was good enough to play for Delhi. Not to forget Ashish Nehra, Mithun Manhas, Sumit Narwal, who all stood by me.

"In fact, after first few matches, he (Gambhir) said that if I keep working hard at every practice session, I will play for India. He saw in me before I realised myself. Today when I look back about those days, I smile," said Saini.

Saini was summoned to bowl at the India nets during Sri Lanka series in December 2017 as the net bowler but it was Gambhir who told him to concentrate on Ranji Trophy final.

It's not too far when he 'll start crediting someone famous after getting in to Indian team.....And 5 year down the line if he become success, all credits 'll be given to that famous personality.

Obviously cause Gauti has no influence in Indian selection and he is praising Gauti after getting selected in Indian team and remembering the old days when he was no name and Gambia backed him up then and see where he is now. So that seems like a genuine praise. Whereas  if u see the other case where a player who  doesn't even play for the famous personality franchise shower fake praise just to get in to the Indian team.

He will make a good selector. The good for nothing selectors that we have now are a waste of space.

Sadly he’ll never become s selector... he’s ruffled too many feathers... To climb on BCCI steps one has be subservient, non-controversial & diplomatic... which he isn’t and won’t be ever.

Although I’ll not be surprised if Dhoni becomes selector one day, if he decides... He might even become an administrator. All he’s to do it to jump into active politics. He’s been doing part time politics for long anyway...

Saurav Ganguly was non subservient not diplomatic and controversial. In a few years he will be Bcci President.

GG is sowing the right seeds. These old hags like Chetan Chauhan are going to be history soon.

Dhoni will become the coach of Indian Team.

Controlling will get way easier.

He was always Diplomatic... He can become BCCI chief as long as he’s diplomatic...

Urmi, Ganguly will never want to become a Selector...

Setai Toh.
Knowing Ganguly, he will never want to become a figurehead selector sandwiched between Bunty and the BCCI head.
He will become the head instead

He's going to make himself even more popular. 0-5 whitewash in ENG, 0-4 in Aus and 0-4 in SA.

Conflicted over this. As much as I admire Gambhir, he has no right to publicly disrespect Bedi. Gambo may be a well wisher of Indian cricket but Bedi is the conscience of Indian cricket.

gambo has been fighting for this for more then an year even for youngsters like unmukt n rana with coach bhaskar

DDCA is mess , n if these 2 have done that they have to be suspended.....the bashing by gambhir is very small

Acc to that article the indian opener assuming chetan chauhan didnt even look at saini in nets, damn that guy bowls high 140k + how can u even not look at him

Bedi who keeps criticising IPL, atleast u dnt see biasness in IPL on basis of caste, state or religion

Many cricketers in past have been in administraion and this kind of things isnt the 1st that means it has been going under these so called ex-cricketer. U cnt be dishonest with job now coz u have played for country ......well ur job as selector or administrator for country is still not over

Gambhir is an amazing team man. His act of stepping down , his handing over of man of the match to his team mate. An ultimate team player with no selfish bone in his body.
Another one is Kumble.
Honest people with keen of eye talent and their proper management is what we need in sports.
But given the money involved in the senior team and also some players and administrators' "god complex" , I don't think this kind of honest hardworking people has a place in the current set up.
Eventually Indian Cricket Team will lose to even the likes of Zimbabwe due to lack of intent and wrong squad selection.
Dekh lena.

Unmukt...such a wasted talent.
He had it in him to become a star batsman.
I feel he was a good candidate for future India Captaincy

Despite being the World Cup winning Captain, I feel he has been treated like crap despite his achievements.
Especially compared with the treatment Virat, Kaif and now Prithvi Shaw is getting .

Bedi for his Bravado in public chickened and forfeited a test for which I will never excuse him. You are a test player if you cannot handle pace you better quit.

Gambhir may be I expected too much from him, I thought he was better than Cook. After he lost his form he never regained confidence to play at that level.

Bedi is no sore loser, he is always very gracious in his praise of younger players. When Ashwin was on the terrific run in 2015-16 Bedi praised him to the skies.

Bedi forfeited the match because most of our players were injured. West Indies bowlers under Lloyd had employed round the wicket bodyline tactics (including beamers) and injured our players out of anger after we chased 406 in the previous test to level the series. Meanwhile Gambhir in the 2011 England tour exhibited the dictionary meaning of 'chickening out'.

Most players were injured but not all, he was fine , they did not bowl beamers and hurt people that is all hogwash created by India media. They were injured because they were ill equipped to handle the pace.

There is a reason why Anshuman Gaekwad played 40 plus tests in those days.

Pakistan toured them immediately after India and they did just fine.

My dad was listening to radio commentary and he remembers talk about the use of beamers by Holding and co. Vishy, Brijesh Patel and Gaekwad were injured and we were already lost at that point. Bedi and Chandra weren't going to save our skins.

Gaekwad was a very gutsy player and our team wasn't that strong those days. What's the surprise if he played 40 tests?

Surprise is his biggest talent was guts , what it means they were more talented players but they simply couldn't handle the heat.

There were no beamers Indian batsmen just did not have enough talent/guts to handle pace of Holding who was at his bowling at his peak pace. You don't hand the test by forfeiting, Smith walked out with one hand and played.Malcolm Marshall literally played with one hand.

This was not Bedi's last rodeo in forfeiting the match, he did the same again in Pakistan in 1978 .

LOL that was to protest Pak cheating. Pakstanis were bowling wides and the cheating home umpires were complicit..what's the point playing when the bowler won't even bowl on the pitch yet the delivery being called dot ball?

It doesn't matter, you don't forfeit the match, he did the same in protest against Holding bowling too many bouncers.
