Dilip Vengsarkar: "How can you drop Rahane from the England ODIs after captaining the Test team against Afghanistan?

Recommended Posts

Former India captain and chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar has joined in the chorus of voices slamming the selection policy adopted by the team management in the recent series defeat against England. Vengsarkar’s comments follow another former captain Sourav Ganguly’s scathing criticism of the chopping and changing in India's middle order during the series.

"Number 3 and number 4 is the most crucial pair,” Vengsarkar told Hindustan Times. “It speaks poorly of the selectors that we don't have a settled number 4. How can you unsettle batsmen of the calibre of Rahul and Rahane?

"If Ajinkya cannot fit in the ODI squad, there is something more to it than meets the eye. How can you drop Rahane in the next match India is playing (ODIs) after captaining the (Test) team against Afghanistan? How can you not have confidence in your top players of the calibre of Rahane, a proven player in English conditions?"

Neither KL Rahul, nor Ajinkya Rahane have been given an extended run in the Indian ODI middle order, and Vengsarkar observed that Rahul in particular has not been allowed to settle into the playing XI.

"What's going on? If you are going to play musical chairs then the confidence of the top players player’s will take a beating,” he said. “It doesn't augur well for the future. He (Rahul) has been unsettled, which is not good for a quality batsman."

Earlier, Sourav Ganguly had said that India needs to find a settled player at number 4, speaking in the post-match analysis after the team's loss in the third ODI at Headingley.

"I think two of your best batsmen are not being looked after properly," he had said. "I’m not saying it’s deliberate. Maybe it’s a mistake, maybe when you look at things from the other side you look at it differently. But it’s my opinion, from this side of the ground, (either) of those two (KL Rahul or Ajinkya Rahane) have to play at 4 because it’s too much pressure for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli."

Either he wants Bambai quota or he can't distinguish between tests & ODIs.

Usual Mumbai quota won’t be surprised if Gavaskar and Manjrekar cry about this while doing commentary.According to Gavaskar in Test matches he feels Che/Jinx have been treated unfairly as their batting order was changed or they were dropped during the India/Afghanistan test match.

What's depressing is that all these ex-players, selectors etc just parrot the same old players (Rahane especially) to be recycled. Why do they never think out of the box and advocate the selection of younger and untried players?

Rahane has been repeatedly recycled and is hopeless in limited over cricket. He is now in his 30s, seriously it its time to move on.

Most of these EX-players wanted raina also back, when he failed no one owned up......instead starting talking crap...yeas if u had diff ideas.

After the first ODI in South Africa Sunng G looked very angry that Rahane is not a regular even though he score 46 in the Joburg Test and then 74 in first ODI he lobbied for his selection as he plays with the straight bat and he is technically good.

Marathi bias nothing else also these chew**ys overrate batting technique some times they fail to understand that little unorthodoxy is needed in odi cricket, rahane no doubt has good technique but is big no in odi cricket, he gets stuck and struggles to rotate strike, weak against spin too, kl Rahul is the best option for num.4 as he can anchor as well as hit big when needed on that position other than Rahul I think krunal can do a good job for us at num.4 but no rahane please

Rahane doesn't deserve the spot in our LOIs team at all. He has been given many chances but he fails to grab it with both his hands. His game doesn't even have a 2nd gear & the 3 hundreds he scored in 90 ODIs is proof of that.

Please enough of TTFs, try the younger ones instead who deserve a chance.

Seems they all are in weeds....Shastri must have given his best contact to get them best quality..

To be honest I find KL Rahul a bit overrated and overhyped nowadays.
So dropping after 2 games wasn't a bad idea on part of Kohli..
50 matches ke baad hum dekhte KL rahul is the new Suresh Raina.

Frankly, I am annoyed by his hype and his fanbwoys crying on social media.
He might be a talented player but he is a minnow basher in ODIs and maybe even T20s.
I just tolerate this social media weeping about a particular player and public pressure on Kohli for including players.

Cricket is not a movie that you will pass off **** as gold.

Whatever he is, genuine or hype ...  if he is thought to be a serious long term  prospect by our team management then he should get 10 to 15 games on the trot.   If he not thought of as a serious long term prospect then don't give him even one game.

This should apply to every player.

I don't understand this constant confusion in the minds of the management and constant chopping and changing of our team.

It is because of this confusion about which talent is a good international prospect, in the minds of Kohli and Shastri, that old players are prefered. They just dont seem to have the ability to identify new high quality international prospects.

Kohli and Shastri are afraid of losing (but they end up losing anyways).
They just don't like to experiment and back some players for a long while.
Especially the ones who are not in their close knit circle.

Rahul has done well in Tests and should be an automatic choice there.
T20s-I am divided.
He is not a natural player, but has put efforts to change his game but he is pretty inconsistent over here too.
And he is your typical Zimbabwe basher in ODIs.

Basically, Kohli and Shastri don't exactly think Rahul as some high profile talent that needs to be nurtured when it comes to LOIs.
I agree what they are doing with him in Tests is Crime.
But in case of LOIs, Rahul only gets chances because his backers have immense media power to force Kohli-Shastri to give him a spot.
I honestly don't like this media outcry over some player who is seemingly 2nd grade.
That's why I was(am still) apprehensive about Pant and his hype too.
Overhyping some player before him making a substantial mark in World Cricket is one wrong thing PR people are doing.
What if these players, after becoming permanent in the sides, turn out to be ****?

really??

He will only come good if he is given a good run, which i don't think he ever will under this musical chair selection policy,if rohit after close to a gazillion odi failures can still remake himself to be an opener and do well,i have hope from rahul and not based on hype, based on what i have seen from him in tests and t20s.

He has played less than 12 odis after all this hoola hoop and most of them at different positions and getting dropped after every 2 -3 odis, how do you expect to make a player when you won't even give him a more than 3 odis at a particular spot, there is no logic in this constant dropping,we will never make a great odi team like this just a good one and will still continue to loose crunch matches when top 3 doesn't fire.

A confession: there was a time around maybe 2014/15 that I thought Rahane was the best all round batsman in India, he had scored runs abroad and some in IPL as well. The way he smashed a straight six off Steyn in the WC reminded me of Dravid's off Donald. Alas, it wasn't meant to be and 4 years later we're still not sure who fits in at 4 (and 5 and 6 and maybe even 7):whine:

Rahul is a once in a generation player. England is no minnow and he scored a 100 there in T20. two T20I 100s in less than 200 games.

I thought so too.

He was my favourite too.
