LORD_analyst
tendulkar in an interview- The curious case of India's batting bulwark Cheteshwar Pujara is a pertinent example in the present context. Pujara recently consumed 70-odd balls to get off the mark in a County game for Yorkshire, revealing that there could be a psychological block he's struggling with. (When asked), Tendulkar does admit "It's far too much. Again, I'm not trying to be critical here. It's good to be cautious, good to respect the conditions, but...," he trails off. The former India batsman does acknowledge Pujara's strength as No. 3 in Test cricket does rely on wearing down the opposition. That, he says, is a good weapon in the batting armoury. "(But) There needs to be a good deal of balance between wearing down the opposition and tearing them down. Batsmen need to understand that balance," says Tendulkar. beetle
Pujara in his snail form is a liability. Even if he wears the opposition down...the score board has to show some numbers. He wears the non striker down too. SandeepMotta, UrmiSinhaRay, Suhaan and 4 others 3 4 Link to comment
R!TTER
Pujara has been "overglorified" by the hackmaster Shastri, calling him ChePu, for his defensive abilities. Back in the Ranchi test against Aus, when we crossed 500, he took zero initiative to score quick runs against SoK or Lyon and up the ante, same for Saha but he's a pure WK. Outside Asia he simply shuts shop & doesn't have the strokes to pace his innings, if Pujara doesn't do something about his S/R he'll join a long and never ending list of (test) failures for India abroad. Trichromatic
Pujara is a hack and should be criticized openly. He has been allowed too much to play game to his liking and hurting team during this. Kohli was right in criticizing him. Pujara isn't scoring runs anyway. It's better if he is pressurized to change the game. He doesn't deserve the leverage he is getting for 7-8 years. Popular Post Trichromatic
He has been playing outside Asia consistently for almost 5 years and averages 27 with bat and that too at SR of 39. That's tailender stuff at no 3. He face 70 balls per inning on average. So, it's not that he manages to survive long for without scoring runs. For a good no 3 batsman, his average number of deliveries faced should be somewhere around 85-100. Since 2014, he has been surviving 61 deliveries per inning.
