If you are selecting Ash at 7 then why are you selecting him as a bowler as well? Do-Do Ashwin kahan se laye ab...

After selecting Pandya as all-rounder, there is no option for Ashwin, Ishant Shami Umesh bowling attack

Pandya / Ashwin Ā (Ā based on the pitch )

What do you think about pitches? Which pitches should be good for Pandya?

Ā

I think England is not exactly suitable place for Pandya. He is hit the deck bowler and if conditions are good for swing, then frontline bowlers will do bulk of work. Captain won't have much faith in Pandya anyway. For ex - last test in SA where he got 8 overs in match.

Ā

And Pandya didn't even pick wickets in 2 tests there. Scored 26 runs in 5 innings after that 93.Ā

Ā

Even if conditions are overcast, English pitches tend to help spinners later in the match.Ā

Ā

Ashwin is easily much better batsman and surely won't do something like 26 runs in 5 innings. Bowling wise, doubt Pandya has more to offer than Ashwin. To me it seems Ashwin should be ahead of Pandya in almost all test just for his superior batting.Ā

Just think about the time and resources that have been wasted on Pandya, if even now he can't make the team.Ā

If we get a greentop then there is no point inĀ playing 2 spinners.

Ā

Pandya has a decent outswinger. Ā Moreover, greentops aidĀ seam movement too. Ā

Ā

In that test we played 4 specialist fast bowlers. On a track / in conditions favouring pacers, just 3 pacers don't work, especially when 2 such pacers are high SR bowlers.

In 1 of them, he did not get to bowl much because there were 4 specialist pacers. In the other one, the pitch was such that Bhuvi was dropped.Ā

Ā

I said include Pandya based on the pitch, meaning greentops. Ā Did not talk about overcast conditions.

Ā

Overcast conditions and flattish pitch ... play Ashwin as conditions change.

Ā

Ā

Why leave out that 93 Ā on a really tough pitch Ā ? Ā

Ā

On that SAĀ tour, our preparationsĀ wereĀ so poor that no batter apart from Kohli did well. Ā Why single out Pandya who atleast had one good knock Ā ?

Ā

Ā

P.s -- I was actually in favour of 4 specialist fast bowlers and Ashwin and droppingĀ Hardik ...Ā before Kuldeep displayed superlative form. Ā .

Ā

Now, with Kuldeep putting his hand up really high, 2 spinners can't be a certainty on all pitches.

Pandya averaged 54 with ball in SA. Ashwin can do better than that on any greentop.

Ā

Doubt he is a good test bowler than Ashwin in any condition except maybe flat bouncy pitches of Aus.

Ā

He played 1 good inning, but overall do you consider him to beĀ better batsman than Ashwin?

Ā

If he can be considered to better batsman, then I agree he should play ahead of Ashwin, however bowling wise doubt he has advantage over Ashwin.

We willĀ play both Ash and Pandya + all 3 Umesh, Ishant, Shami.

Ā

I don't think Kuldeep should be tried just yet, unless the pitch favors 2 spinners. Ash > Kuldeep as of now

Ā

Most English batters, barringĀ Root in the 3rd ODI, could not read Kuldeep at all.

Ā

If Kuldeep clicks, we may have the chance of dismissing England for modest totals. Ā Don't think Ashwin will have that effect in England. He will at best be the steady bowler who will do well if the pitch becomes helpful later on. But Kuldeep can deceive on non-spinning tracks as well.

Ā

This is a risk we must take if we are serious about winning the series. This is a long series, and if Kuldeep looks ordinary, Ashwin can always be given back the first spinner's role.

+1. Team has try Kuldeep and see if he can surprise English batsmen at least once. Doesn't matter if they figure him out later, he does that work even 1 test, it will be great for team.

Ā

Kuldeep should be our specialist spinner at least for 2 tests or any test where spinners are likely to get some help.

Ā

It is not just a question of bowling averages. In my experience, on greentops, mostĀ captains don't like removing pacers from the attack.

Ā

As we sawĀ in the S.A. series, Ā Pandya bowled many more overs than Ashwin in the first test and picked up more wickets too as a result. Ā In the 3rd test, Ashwin was dropped despite usĀ playing 4 specialist pacers.

Ā

On such pitches, the 2ndĀ spinnerĀ will be totally wasted.

Ā

Ā

Ā

Pandya can be a better test batsman than Ashwin at No.7 on greentops ... especially with us having a poor lower order in the abense of Bhuvi.

Ā

On such tracks, slightly better technique and staying power doĀ not work.

Ā

You need a No.7 batter who can score a quickfire 50+ on a good day. Everyone will get a ball with his name written on it, sooner or later on greentops.

Ā

We have to take a practical approach regarding both batting and bowling.

Ā

Ā

Ashwin has batting average of 30. Hardik has batting average of 37. Yes, there is difference in sample size due to less tests played by Hardik, but the average can go upwards or downwards or even hold up somewhere near 37.

Ā

In SA test series played in SA, Ashwin scored 91 whereas Hardik scored 119.Ā

Ā

But Virat will look runs from bowlers like Ashwin and Bhuvi in conditions where our batsmen are incapable of batting properly. So Hardik and Ashwin are sure selections imo.
