“You have to score 400 runs in an innings in Test cricket in order to be competitive. If they get 400 runs in the first innings, they will win,” Ganguly told reporters at Eden Gardens today.

“India will have a chance. They are a good side, if they bat well, they will do well in England. They can win the test series. India have got a big chance of winning.”

“I am sure MSD will get back to scoring runs. Whatever he does, it’s his decision,” he said.

I agree with Ganguly this time. Usually the onus is on bowlers to win test matches, but how bad we batted last time, I expect the batsmen to win it.

Openers will play an important role we have Dhawan and Vijay one plays like a hack and he isn't playing Asia so he has to take his time and convert his innings into a big one and Vijay is fading away as well.KL is on his first tour if he is given a chance the going will be tough for him too.

I hope Dhawan is on the bench the whole series unless Pujara is dropped and Rahul slides down to 3rd position. I don't think Dhawan is cut out for England

Batting is the biggest concern. In SA our batsmen none apart from Virat scored runs at good average (48) . Everyone but Virat flopped and were pathetic batting performance wise averaging less than 20. Details are as follows:

Top Order

Player / Innings / Runs / Average

Vijay / 6 / 102 / 17

Shikhar / 2 / 32 / 16

Chet / 6 / 100 / 17

Rahul / 4 / 30 / 7.50

Middle order

Player / Innings / Runs / Average

Virat / 6 / 286 / 48

Rohit / 4/ 78 / 20

Hardik 6 / 119 / 20

Wicket - keepers

Player / Innings / Runs / Average

Parthiv 4 / 46 / 14

Saha /  2 / 8/ 4

Bhuvi (101) and Ashwin (90) contributed 191 runs, which were 5 runs more than total tally of runs scored by 3 openers and 2 wicket-keepers (Vijay, Shikhar, Rahul, Parthiv and Saha) who scored 186.

To be frank it’s a fragile batting line up in order to win the series have to play out of our skins.

It's not a fragile batting lineup. Same batsmen will score 500 and 600 + team totals in India. We will see double centuries being scored by same players and even the odd triple like Nair did.

Problem is the batsmen are like fish out of water when the conditions are unfamiliar. Our batsmen will need less green grass on wicket, sun during course of play, no overcast conditions, no quality pace bowlers in opponent pacers to exploit weakness in those conditions. Whereas in conditions at home, the fish out of water will be like Lions in jungle.

I called them fragile because in overseas they fall like nine pins apart from one or two.If it’s a grassy wicket our bowlers will come into play but our batsman have to deliver if we have to win this series.

Are we mentally strong enough to come back from the behind? Do we have bowlers to bowl probing spells for long periods? They bowl one or two good overs then they just don't sustain it.  Runs are not enough if you don't have bowlers to create opportunities.  We have a large group of bowlers who are either underdeveloped or partially developed. You cannot pick one bowler and say "here is a complete bowler we have".  There is no "go to" bowler. You just hope it turns out to be one of those good days for a bowler. When was the last time a seamer took 25 wickets in a Test series? Not in the last 10 years. or even 20 wickets? Just once. Unreliable seamers, inept spinners, throw in mediocre slip fielders. You need batsmen to score 600 runs to use scoreboard pressure. Not 400 runs.

Ishant Sharma 22 wickets in 3 tests 2011 against WI in WI

Next best is

Bhuvi 19 wickets in 5 tests 2014 in England

and we are missing our best test batsmen in english conditions , if you know who i mean   @Switchblade

I don’t want to endure his torture anymore I was heartbroken the way he played at Lords and Leeds and then the way he trolled us all but still one of the most memorable moments here on Icf the anticipation for 4 hours then the very next day anti climax :phehe:.

Ishant just mentioned that now even India has great bowlers which was not the case previously and after ten years he understood his bowling and how he should go about it

We did not even score 500 runs in any of the 3 tests in SA. 400 in an innings would be a dream in those conditions. Our highest innings score was 304 runs, out of which Virat scored 153.

SA Tour:

Test 1 - 417 runs

Test 2 - 458 runs

Test 3 -  434 runs

We lack an ATG pacer, that is for sure. Normal Pacers will struggle to take 25 wickets in test series. But in SA our bowling was better than batting. Bring on test series in India and our spinners will take 25 in a series.
