ENGvIND The dropped catches tracking thread

Recommended Posts

What say folks? Shall we use this thread for keeping track of dropped regulation chances, culprits, affected bowlers, lucky batsmen, number of runs cost etc?  We can also keep track of the difficult ones/half chances missed because generally what is half chance for our maharathis is routine for the best catching outfits like England, Australia, SA and NZ. Catching has been a big issue for us and with 5 tests we will drop quite a few rest assured. Why not keep track of all of them in this one thread and later after the series arrive at the final figures and analysis, shortcomings, observations, personnel going forward, methods to improve etc?

Cricbuzz commentary attached along with runs cost by the individual batsman who got reprieve.

Video also attached, special thanks to @sscomp32 who put in the effort to get the footage in the most user friendly format.

Test 1, Edgbaston

England 1st innings:

1. Jennings dropped off Ishant by Rahane, runs cost = 33

Quote
5.3

Ishant to Jennings, no run, dropped! Keep a tab. Keep a track of it folks. They dropped so many catches the last time they toured here. The series turned then on the drop by Jadeja at Southampton. Let's wait and watch what happens here. Lovely delivery from Ishant, got it absolutely right, pinned Jennings to the crease, produced the ball that curved across the batsman and got the edge. It was low and going to third slip who was Kohli but Jinks dived across and shelled it. Got both hands but failed to hang on. Kohli tells his deputy that it was his catch

2. Curran dropped off Shami by Karthik (WK), runs cost = nil

Quote
87.5

Shami to Sam Curran, no run, dropped. Yet another instance of an Indian fielder diving in front of the other .. and putting them down. Absolute gold nut this from Shami, pitching it full, swinging away, drawing the outside edge and Karthik flies one-handed in front of Dhawan, uncleanly

England 2nd innings:

1. Malan dropped off (not gathered cleanly) Ishant by Dhawan, runs cost = 3

Quote
18.6

Ishant to Malan, no run, Dhawan isn't sure. He has caught that at first slip and wants the umps to go upstairs. The soft signal is not out. No problems with the no-ball. We move on. Are the fingers under the ball? The crowd boo as they see it on the big screen. Not sure why. Dhawan didn't claim it. Erasmus has a couple of looks and is happy to go with the original call and the crowd now cheer. Malan stays. Always goes in favor of the batsman these calls, difficult to say whether Dhawan had the fingers under the ball, went straight in for sure.

2. Curran dropped off Shami by Dhawan, runs cost = 50

Quote
37.3

Shami to Sam Curran, FOUR, did it carry to Dhawan at first slip? Yes it did. And goes right through, touching the fingers. Kohli turns his head away in disappointment next to the opener, while the Delhi man manages a smile. Was a tough chance as it was dying on him, but he was late to react as the cut from Sam Curran produced a thick bottom edge. Slow reactions means that will go down as a drop

3. Rashid dropped off Umesh by Dhawan, runs cost = 3

Quote
40.4

U Yadav to Adil Rashid, no run, dropped by Dhawan after juggling and he has a big smile on his face after he gets up. Patted by DK and KL. Was a regulation edge and should have been taken. Must say DK put Dhawan off by moving across like how Jennings did to Malan when Kohli was put down. Kohli roars his disappointment, full outside off, Adil Rashid drives and edges, was flying to the opener at chest-height, who couldn't cling on, it popped up, hit his shoulder and then as he was falling tried to catch it again, but failed. Let-off for Adil Rashid

Test 2, Lord's

No catch dropped

Test 3, Trent Bridge

England 1st innings

1. Rahane didn't attempt a catch of Jennings, Bumrah the bowler, runs cost = 19

Quote
1.1

Bumrah to Jennings, FOUR, right into the gap. Jennings gets away. That should've been gully's catch. But Jinks and third slip look at each other and the chance goes. Rising short of length delivery outside off, Jennings failed to keep the defence down, it reared up on him and took the healthy edge, the fielders were ball-watching

2. Cook dropped off Ishant by Pujara, runs cost = 0

Quote
11.4

Ishant to Cook, no run, dropped by Che at first slip! Straight in and out. Did Pant put Pujara off with that dive across? Ishant is so unlucky. Full and drew Cook into the drive, late movement, that caught the edge, went into the bread-basket of Pujara, one eye would've been on Pant and down it goes. There was a chance of the ball lodging in the legs as it slid down, but slipped away

England 2nd innings

1. Butler dropped off Bumrah by Pant, runs cost = 105

Quote
26.4

Bumrah to Buttler, no run, dropped by Pant. But the Indians go up to the youngster and console him by clapping. Technical flaw from Pant and that's why the catch went down. To Bumrah, he takes one or two steps to his left, saw that in the first innings as well, this takes the regulation edge on the defence and since Pant is already to his left, he cannot get back in time. Still he sees the edge and dives to his right but can only get a glove and down it goes. Needs to work on his keeping skills

2. Rashid dropped off Shami by Kohli, runs cost = 11*

Quote
90.6

Shami to Adil Rashid, no run, dropped! It's the captain - Kohli. Pitched up delivery and Rashid drives with hard hands. Gets a fat outside edge and went quickly to Kohli's right at third slip. He probably responded late and failed to hold onto it. An apology from the skipper to the bowler.

Test 4, The Rose Bowl

England 1st innings:

1. Butler dropped off Shami by Pant, runs cost = 10

Quote
22.3

Shami to Buttler, no run, did this carry? Yes it did! A dropped chance. Good length delivery outside off stump, just leaves the batsman, Buttler leaves the ball very late, the ball takes the toe-end of the bat, because Buttler was trying to leave, Pant thought it was coming up towards waist at least, but the ball took the edge last moment and then went down, to which Pant couldn't react it time. Tried to bring his hands down without bending his body but it didn't stick

England 2nd innings:

No catch dropped

Test 5, Kennington Oval

England 1st innings:

1. Cook dropped off Ishant by Rahane, runs cost = 34

Quote
30.5

Ishant to Cook, no run, dropped! Rahane at a close gully position drops it. That squared the batsman up as that was closer to the sticks after landing on a length. Cook outer-edged the ball for it to carry shin high to Rahane, who juggled it once before dropping it. Ishant would feel peeved and so would India. Dropped catches can cost you dearly

2. Ali dropped off Bumrah by Kohli, runs cost = 48

Quote
31.2

Bumrah to Moeen Ali, no run, goes round the wicket and gets the edge! Kohli at third slip shells it. A one-handed attempt and the ball did not stick as it was flying. Fuller ball, Moeen Ali got sucked into driving it and got a thick edge for the ball to fly away. Two drops in four balls

England 2nd innings:

1. Ali dropped off Ishant by Rahul, runs cost = 6

Quote
24.2

Ishant to Moeen Ali, FOUR, bang through second slip. And it's KL Rahul of all people - someone who remembered reminding the world of his thirteenth take in the first innings. But this one flies high near his head to his left, quicker than he'd expected with Ali driving hard at it. Bursts through the reverse cup

2. Root dropped off Jadeja by Rahane, runs cost = 46 till next drop (92-46)

Quote
55.2

Jadeja to Root, 1 run, edged and dropped. A sharp chance and Rahane can't hold on at first slip. This was pushed through flatter and just outside off, Root went back on the cut and got a thick edge, the ball was travelling and was too fast for Rahane, got a hand onto it as he arched back, but can't hold on

3. Root dropped off Shami by Pujara, runs cost = 33 (125-92)

Quote
76.1

Shami to Root, 2 runs, another catch has gone down. Pujara spills it at first slip. This is ordinary cricket from India. They have dropped 2 in the first innings and they have dropped 2 in this innings too. It was a fuller length delivery outside off, Root was late on it, he gets an outside edge and Pujara drops it at first slip. To be fair, he was put off by Pant who dived right across him, almost misses another hundred there - Root

Is it an ok idea and can admins/mods pin this thread if needed? @Trichromatic @G_B_ @Cricketics @sourab10forever @velu @asterix @beetle

Likewise we can do the same for England which will help arrive at the overall picture after the series is over. I am expecting them to trump us in this department but still will be interesting to note the difference in level between the 2 teams. In Jo'berg SA missed 5 while we missed none and won quite comfortably in the end.

Test 1, Edgbaston

India 1st innings:

Quote
30.6

Anderson to Kohli, no run, dropped! By Malan at 2nd slip. Anderson is so so unlucky. This is fantastic bowling once more, drew him across finally and made him play at a full outswinger, the edge carried nicely to Malan. Straight in and out. Can't believe it are the Englishmen. Kohli gets a life. No justice for Anderson

Runs cost = 30 till next drop (51-21)

31.1

Stokes to Hardik Pandya, 1 run, now Cook drops it at first slip. What is happening out here? Unbelievable Test match cricket. And England have put down two in two. Loose from Hardik Pandya, driving at a ball well wide of off, such an easy chance

Runs cost =  22

46.4

Stokes to Kohli, 1 run, dropped! Stokes is down on his knees. He affords a smile. But it was a tough one for Malan. Very full and outside off, Kohli down on his back knee looks to squeeze it out, the outside edge flies to the right of second slip, Malan dives across and gets his hand to it. A third slip would have gobbled that up, but England have two slips and a gully and the ball went right between the two. Since it was to Malan's right he went for the catch and was only able to shell it

Runs cost = 98 (149-51) till his eventual dismissal

India 2nd innings:

Quote
4.2

Anderson to Vijay, 2 runs, edged and dropped, and it's that man - Malan - once again. He's having a bad match. The perfect away swinger from Anderson, full and shaping away late, drew Vijay into an expansive drive, got a thick edge, to the right of second slip. Malan was late on the dive, the ball hit his thumb and bursts out

Runs cost = 5

Test 2, Lord's

India 1st innings

Quote
11.6

Broad to Rahane, no run, dropped by Root at 4th slip. Full outside off, Rahane drives away from the body and is lucky to see Root shell that to his right. Was travelling but had to be taken, once he got hands to it. Rahane gets a life

Runs cost = 13

21.3

Woakes to Kohli, FOUR, Kohli gets lucky. Woakes is distraught. Buttler at second slip slow to react and the ball eludes his diving left-hand and runs away. Woakes got the ball to move late and sowed a seed of doubt in Kohli's mind, he was late in leaving that and the ball takes the face of his withdrawing bat and goes to Buttler's left. Wouldn't have carried to Cook at first slip, Buttler may have seen that late. Kohli gets a life

Runs cost = 4

23.2

Woakes to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, Buttler has dropped it again. That's so bad from Buttler. Grasped at thin air and didn't even get near the nick. Healthy edge on the drive as Hardik Pandya chased one outside off, lucky as it flew to the right of Buttler, who was beaten for pace. May have not seen it at all

Runs cost = 0

India 2nd innings

No drop catch

Test 3, Trent Bridge

India 1st innings

Quote
57.6

Woakes to Rahane, no run, what an effort! But, not good enough, in the end. Was a hit-me delivery from Woakes - short and wide outside off. Rahane rocked back and hammered the cut shot. Didn't bother to keep it down and almost paid the price for it. Anderson at backward point timed his jump to perfection and got a hand on it. Didn't stick! 'Hands on head' moment for the Englishmen

Runs cost = 24

81.4

Broad to Hardik Pandya, no run, WOW! It's all happening here - the spectacle that is Test cricket! Not quick a scrambled seam, the inswinger angled in with the extra bounce off a short of length. Hardik Pandya had committed to the front foot, and it gets big on him. Really big on him. It might have taken a feather off the glove, thuds into the shoulder, and lobs towards Jennings at 3rd slip who drops it! Broad is distraught, and Jennings just looks embarrassed; wants the ground to swallow him up.

Runs cost =  4

92.6

Anderson to Ashwin, 1 run, did that carry to Pope? At fourth slip! May well have. But it goes down. Went sharply and to his left, he dived but the ball slipped out. Ashwin squared up by a late outswinger, the edge was found and they take a single which suits India. Replays show that Pope got a left-hand so definitely a chance

Runs cost = 1

India 2nd innings

Quote
18.1

Woakes to Dhawan, no run, edged and dropped! Woakes turns around and goes back to his run-up. Cook, the culprit! It was very similar to the ball that got Dhawan out in the first innings. Short of a good length delivery that nips away a tad just outside off, Dhawan gets squared up and outside-edges it to first slip. A dolly at first slip and Cook puts it down. Oh, England!

Runs cost = 11

39.2

Anderson to Pujara, no run, dropped by Buttler now at second slip. What's Anderson's expression? I guess he is close to throwing a fit. Pujara hung his bat out to dry outside off and the ball took the edge to Buttler's left, got his left-hand and do

Runs cost = 32

90.4

Anderson to Kohli, FOUR, edged but right through the legs of gully! Anderson cannot believe his luck, Kohli gets away. Was a lovely outswinger and forced VK into the drive, the thick edge flew through Jennings and to the fence in a flash. Wow!

Runs cost = 10

Test 4, The Rose Bowl

India 1st innings

Quote
44.1

Stokes to Rahane, 1 run, was that a dropped chance? Oh yes, Rahane gets a life from Root. Rahane is going to bat with a positive frame of mind, so he will not stop himself from flashing at ones that can be left alone. Stokes got this length ball to leave the batsman late, thick edge results, no gully, so Root dives to his right at third slip but only gets a hand on it

Runs cost = 6

India 2nd innings

No catch dropped

Test 5, Kennington Oval

India 1st innings

Quote
15.5

Moeen Ali to Pujara, no run, dropped! That was a tough one at FSL. The inside edge as he tried to block by dancing down the track and Cook under the hammer got a left hand to it but the ball did not stick. Tough one but will go down as a chance

Runs cost = 27

85.6

Adil Rashid to Bumrah, no run, inside edge and Jennings drop it at FSL, Bumrah plays down the wrong line of the googly. The inside edge carried to Jeenigs who fails to grab it

Runs cost = 0

India 2nd innings

Quote
86.3

Anderson to Jadeja, no run, dropped by a diving Bairstow! The off-cutter outside off, Jadeja gets forward and push it into the off-side, gets a massive edge to the left of Bairstow, who half-dives to take it, but it pops out. It was his catch, as it wouldn't have carried to first slip. That would have been #564 for Anderson!

Runs cost = 10

Throws a wrench into this idea that MS is the best wk in the nation, he may be the best against spinners but he's always been average against pacer. In fact one of the main problems on away tours was that he stood a metre or two behind the ideal position in slips, that also meant that catches would fall way short especially in front of the 1st slip.

I guess Dhoniites still live their delusion, where MS is better (wk) than Gilly and a better finisher than Bradman.
