2. Performance by decades

Blue - wins, yellow - losses

1980s and 2000s were clearly most successful period of Indian cricket in England. India didn't lose any series in 2000s. 2010s have been heavily marred with defeats with 4-0 and 3-1 losses.

4. Most runs

While SRT has scored most runs, Dravid has been most successful Indian batsman in England with 6 100s and batting average of 65. Compared to other overseas countries, England relatively has been better experience for Indian batsmen with many batsmen having their best overseas tours here.

5. Current batsmen

Among current batsmen, only Vijay and Rahane have done well to some extent. Bhuvneswar Kumar was 4th best batsman and that tells a part of the story. Pujara, Kohli, Dhawan and other Indian batsmen have struggled in their previous outing here.

6. Indian bowlers

While Indian batsmen have enjoyed good time in England, Indian bowlers have struggled throughout the history despite England being one of the favorable places for pacers and one of few overseas countries where spinners can fancy their chances in few tests. Kapil, Kumble all average in high 30s. In the chart below, players are ordered by their averages. Bhuvneswar Kumar had good series last time and his absence will hurt the team a lot. Zaheer Khan had few good tours and was instrumental in victories there.

7. Main tormentors for Indian team (Wickets and averages)
Anderson and Broad have dominated Indian batsmen and it is reflected in their records in 2010s. While Broad has better average, Anderson has his name on top Indian batsmen namely Kohli, Tendulkar and Dravid.
Misery of Indian team during 2014 tour is highlighted by 19 wickets of Moeen Ali which just added salt their wounds during heavy defeats.

Bell, Cook, KP, Root and Ballance have plundered runs in 2010s and previously Vaughan did well against India. Indian team found difficult to dismiss Root and Ballance last time, and they have make sure that they don't bring Cook back in form this time.

Given India has won only 6 tests in history, is it fair to expect this team to win 2 or 3 tests there in a series.

Yes, we won 2 games in a 3 test series 1985 under Kapil, could've won 2 under Dravid in three match 2007 series as well.
