Just get a specialist batsman for next test

Recommended Posts

Clearly batting is weak and it needs cushion of extra batsman.

Although all reserves aren't good, but guess it's time that India play 6 specialist batsmen with keeper at no 7.

Bowlers are in much better for in last 4 years and have shown ability even in absence of top 2 bowlers.

the question then is - Is pandya better than a specialist batsman waiting.

And then when Bhuvi comes back would be able to do a 70% of pandya in batting so you dont loose much anyway.

Who all make way - Ishant for bumrah - thats down to skill and form.

Umesh for Bhuvi - clearly.

So Bhuv,Shami, Ishant/Bumrah , Ashwin, + batsman instead of pandya. But the batsman needs to score more than Pandya..so who is it ?

The thing is Pandya can not be pressure free like say an Ashwin or Bhuv - even Ashwin is pressured this match..they need to be expected to score every game. A batsman just means their only game is batting so they are expected to score..pandya should have same pressure he needs to score runs every game..not withstanding what he does with the ball and vice versa, then only he is good enough - stokes does this in England.

Bhuvi is not coming for this series at least.  Bumrah will replace Umesh next game

While failures of top order may give an impression that extra batsmen won't do much when top is not doing anything but thing is that extra batsman might just bat in the better condition, or you just increase chances of scoring more.

U will concede more runs too if pitch is easy to bat.

If pitch is easy to bat...

We are bowling opposition out easily overseas now.

When did we do that? At Centurion, the easiest pitch in SA series, Pujara ran himself out so did stupid Pandya. Our bowlers looked toothless, except Ashwin, and everyone dropped catches like they've been doing since 2015. If it's a flat but dry surface IMO Jadeja should come in for Pandya, we still need 3 quicks unless it's really dry, in which case Pandya can do the part time pacer job with 2 spinners holding an end up.

Important rule: you don’t reduce your weaknesses by adding more of it. It would be like a struggling family adding more malnourished and under educated children to mix so that they get better off

Extra batsman can be played if our batting is strong and the bowling is ok.  We have a gifted batsman in the reserve so we further strengthen our strength to leverage on it (and cover up for the relatively weak bowling department by putting up a big score). In the current scenario, if the one that is being considered as the extra batsman is better than anyone in 5 batting slots, he should just take 1 of the 5 batting slots so we pick the 5  best batsmen in the 11

Tbh this match proves nothing. Neither you can say Indian bowling is strong nor batting is weak. Infact their bowlers did a lot better than ours. Batsman weren't good from either sides.

So, England have two of their ATG fast bowlers playing, so, obviously their bowling is stronger.  We had two of our lead bowlers missing in BK and Bumrah. At least in these conditions, BK is as good as Anderson.  Ishant made up for it somewhat in 2nd innings.
