Why are there no good test specialists in India ?

England has Anderson, we got Ishant.

England got cook, we got Pujara.

Given the vast domestic system, the huge number of players, there should be a channel to have test specialists who don't run after IPL money and instead excel in tests only. That would be a reasonable career too. Everyone can't run after every format, it just ruins test cricket whenever we step out.

What gives ?

Problem is many people in India want test specialists to play tests like LOI .... Have read tons of posts on SR of batsmen and averages of bowlers, when it should be the other way around in tests

I guess you're referring to Pujara, who doesn't do justice to his position in overseas tests tbh.

Because everyone wants that IPL money so it makes little sense specialising in Tests.

Everyone isn't suited for IPL. Some may be able to excel instead in test cricket. If there is a reasonable incentive available to work on tests only, they could pursue that as a career choice.

The current system isn't working, we barely got to drawing abroad under Ganguly/Dravid and winning one or two matches here and there, and then we're back to being lambs and ducklings abroad.

I ll like to back Rahane, the guy is not a messiah abroad like many say here but he is definitely someone who can part of a nucleaus going ahead. His main problem is inconsistency, which he needs to work on.

But someone with some sense need to impress upon him that he ll only be selected for tests and doors are shut on him for other formats. He needs to work on his game and try to make name for himself in tests. His game has stagnated quite a lot in this futile pursuit of becoming a 3 format player.

Like we were winning game after game overseas before IPL.

I think England will have same problems too, once guys like Cook Anderson go. This England batting line-up is brittle, their back-bone is Root-Bairstow-Stokes-Butler, pretty much their ODI line-up (minus Morgan).

The other point, powerful attraction of IPL for budding Indian cricketers is bigger than anything in cricket, probably bigger than ODI WC. The money, glitz, the 24/7 media circus for over 3-4 months. Look at even Pujara, this guy so delusional he still thinks there is role for him in IPL. Let's be honest, if I/you was/were talented and fortunate to play in a Ranji team, my full focus would be to get into IPL.

Anyways, there is a fundamental issue with the quality of cricketers coming out of India and performing overseas since 2011 and this is despite the huge number of A tours to Aus, SA and Eng.

I will end with: DK...IPL 2018  Auction Price 2018: 7.4 crore. Was a joke in Lords test, looked out place in cricket.

We got to an improvement phase after the dark 90s. Were able to tie in England & Aus first, then won in Eng & WI and came close to winning in Aus until Shree Bucknor lost his eyesight. Tied in SA too in a hard fought series.

The next step should have been a further improvement, instead we went backwards in this decade. If you're honest enough, you'd know how true this has been.

Fully agree. He tried hard and failed in IPL, then all the commies want him in ODIs and now he sucks here as well as can't play spin in India.

Talented player has turned himself into washerman's dog on the international level.

Let's be fair here. Vijay, Pujara and Rahane have only been regulars in the Indian Test team. We can't really say that they've been playing too many formats which is what screwed their mindset for Tests.

I can partially agree with you.

At least Vijay & Rahane are part of IPL and Pujara was trying until last year. Rahane's name is constantly brought out for ODIs as well. Even Ishant is limited to tests.

Besides the system catering for test specialists, the select bunch needs to concentrate on their roles as well rather than go for glory in each format. Otherwise, it just becomes like a department in the corporate world wherein everyone wants to be manager=>director=>VP=>CxO while few are suitable for that path. End result is there's no one left to do the core jobs of engineering & sales which are essential to drive the company forward and require skilled, dedicated & experienced personnel.

Jaddu, Ashwin, Shami, Saha are test specialists and they aren't good, they are phenomenal...among the best in the business. IIRC they even skipped major portions of recent IPL seasons (esp post 2017 Aus series) meaning they are fully committed to real cricket. Also they haven't been in the picture in T50/T20 teams for a while now.

Batting front I agree but that is our weaker suit these days.

None of those skipped any IPL. They all played full IPL this season.
