Anderson's bowling on cloudless day !!!

He is 36 FGS and already delivered 2 wins for his team, yet so much disrespect. In the entire history of Indian cricket we have maybe 1 bowler who can be compared to Indraputra. Normal Anderson is like Iron Man Mark VI, in cloudy conditions he is with Hulkbuster suit. Even the weakest version of him will walk into any of the teams in world cricket, please show some respect to the maestro.

Hardly.

3 of the big 4 spinners and Kapil  have performed both home and away and won us matches.

Kumble, Ashwin and Jadeja have done as well as Anderson.

Most people don't include him in World 11s.

Difficult to rate a cricketer very highly if he can't perform away from home.  That has been the case for decades.

But age takes a toll, difficult to be at top for many consecutive matches. Zak used to break down in the middle of a spell at 32, it's a testament to Sir Andy's fitness that he is still going strong. Watch any sport, the oldie greats still have the brilliance but can't string consecutive good matches together. He was brilliant in the 1st 2 tests and decent today, may be a slight drop in intensity.

Sorry I should have been more specific, I was talking only about quicks and kept Kapil in mind.

Since 2010 he has done well everywhere. Has had some outstanding tours to Aus, Ind, UAE, Lanka, WI etc. He will make my World 11 of this decade. Home bullying isn't a bad thing, I rate home bullies like Sehwag and Ashwin as ATG just like Jimmy. Also what clinches it for Jimmy is his mastery over the top batters of his era like SRT, Sanga, Kallis, VK, Clarke, Amla etc.

Varies from person to person. Different people have different body types and mature at different ages.

Walsh and Imran are examples of 2 pacers who did much better at an older age.  Perhaps Vaas too.

If we are considering certain best periods of players ... then we should do the same for all players.  It would change the benchmark parameters then.

Personally ...  I find it difficult to rate players very highly unless they have performed really well away from home for a large part of their careers.

Its fashionable to downplay Anderson's achievements.

Amazing bowler.

Flawed so not ATG.

Has won his team a series in India and Aus along woth countless games at home.

Anderson averaged 53 on his last tour to India and 43 on his last tour to South Africa.

He averages 41 in Sri Lanka, 40 in South Africa , 35 in Australia and 33.5 in India.

Do you think any Asian player would get away with such figures  ?   The " Western "  media have gobbled up Asian cricketers for far less failures.

How many English have you encountered, who have ackowledged Kumble, Ashwin and Jadeja  as greats   ?

They have been after Tendulkar and Kohli at the slightest opportunity.

We can't be like them, can't make the same mistakes the goras do. I acknowledge Anderson as a great just like I rate Ashwin as a great. IMO Jimmy is the fast bowling equivalent of Kumble and the latter is an ICC Hall of Famer. AFAIK Kumble does get a lot of praise from Aussies and English, he will obviously pale in comparison before Warne/Murali but so would Anderson when you bring tier 1 pacer ATGs into the mix.

So that makes it right for us to downplay Anderson?

Take his last 8 or 10 year stats amd we may see much better figures....

Sehwag has not so flattering record in 4 countries yet he is rated so high by many. If he had Anderson's longevity, he would hav beem rated higher.

Kumble is genuinely under appreciated, which is unfortunate. Maybe it was because he was from an era where ATG bowlers were plenty.

Ashwin is raved about in Cricket Australia website and the English rate him high. If he achieves the qlequivalent of what Anderson did in Aus and India in any SENA countries, he would be celebrated too.

And finally, yes people will celebrate their own more than others which is natural.

Anderson was poor when he started his career but later improved ny leaps and bounds.

Interesting to see how you mentioned Anderson's average in his last tour to India and SA but ignored his averrage in Aus (25) and Nz (dunno the number but was decent).

Lets give credit where its due.

Anderson is an amazing bowler.

Not an ATG but not overrated either. Only those who overrate him are those who compare him to Steynor call him ATG.

Doing the right thing is necessary regarding the important things in life.

Fans discussing a cricketer on a forum  (  who is not even aware of such discussions )  is hardly one such area.   :cantstop:

We sometimes take ourselves a bit too seriously here.

I am against picking and choosing certain parts of a cricketer's career ...  while denoting him as an ATG  or near-ATG.

If we do it then we have to do it for every top player.

Ashwin ...  the English rate him high.

During their last Indian tour ...  they were constantly saying that he is good in " these conditions ".   Doubt that is rating him highly.

Australian pitches provide a lot of pace and bounce ... most Australian pacers do well there ... so, not the right example.

He averaged almost 28 in Australia last time ... not a series average which deserves special mention.

NZ  conditions favour swing bowling too ...  it is like Ashwin doing well in SL ...  do we rave about it.

I genuinely do not like him, irrespective of country ...  because he looks very ordinary when there is no movement on offer.

I never like such pacers ... my personal preference.

I only like cricketers who are all-condition cricketers ... whether Indian or foreign ... whether batsmen or bowlers.

Yes the answer lies in the last couple of lines of your post.

You do not like him. He is not your cup of tea.

That's fine but it doesn't make him overrated.

Sehwag sucked when there was movement.

Kumble sucked on pitches that were flat (did well in Aus in the later part of his career).

Ashwin sucks in pattas and in certain tracks (has a chance to correct the record tho).

Similarly Anderson struggles in certain conditions.

Kumble, Anderson and Ashwin are flawed bowlers but they have played an immense role in carrying their team's attack for years and won countless games. Not every bowler has it in him to do it, no matter how favourable the conditions are for him.

Being a leader of your attack and leading from the front is a huge achievement as it comes with a lot of pressure.

People call Anderson to be a very very good bowler which is a perfectly fine assessment.

He has taken 550 wickets and is still going strong. That's just incredible and best part is that he is a pacer racking up these numbers.

Over-rating depends on the assessment of a player ... irrespective of his absolute quality.

There is very little reference to Anderson's performances in non-swinging conditions from cricket experts ...  while there is a lot of talk by cricket experts about Ashwin's performances in non-spinning conditions.  This is where the over-rating of Anderson comes in.

People hav been harsh with Ashwin without understanding stats and context for sure.

Media reputation, perception play a role. No denying it.

But Anderson nailed it in Ashes almost a decade back in 2010 and then did well in India in 2012. Before that, he wasn't rated that great.

When someone performs like an ATG at home and wins the team 2 high profile away series, he will be rated high.

Ashwin stocks hav taken a huge boost ever since SA tour. Let him achieve a bit more and you will see him being celebrated a lot too.

The thing he struggles even at home if their is no cloud cover. Also in India 2012 you completely forgot pannesar and swann who were greater threat than Anderson. He is good in his conditions not all conditions and that is very specific cloud condition.
