After the disappointing Test series against England, vice-captain of the Indian Test squad Ajinkya Rahane is reportedly preparing for the Vijay Hazare Trophy which starts from September 19. The 30-year-old batsman will represent Mumbai in a bid to hit form in the run-up to the World Cup 2019 scheduled in England in eight months’ time. He is expected to play in the first four marches of the domestic tournament.

Rahane had an ordinary Test series in England where he scored 257 runs in 10 innings in five games at an average of 25.70. He hit two half centuries in the entire series with a crucial 81 in the first innings at Trent Bridge, where India won, as his highest. He doesn’t feature in India’ 16-man Asia Cup squad which headed for the UAE to play the tournament that includes Pakistan. India have a busy international scheduled lined up with a home series versus the West Indies and away series against Australia and New Zealand before the World Cup.

“The selectors, led by former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, will pick the team on Wednesday,” The Times of India quoted a source as saying on Wednesday.

Looking for an ODI return

“Besides recovering form, Rahane would have another reason to play in this tournament despite having just taken part in a gruelling series — a few runs here may just help him stay in fray for a spot in India’s team for the World Cup in England next year,” the source was further quoted as saying.

Rahane has played 117 first-class games scoring 9,158 runs at an average of over 51 and 156 List A matches scoring 5,457 runs at an average of 37.63.

The Mumbai batsman will be looking forward to making a comeback to India’s ODI side for the mega event. He played his last ODI against South Africa in February and was dropped for the three-match series against England which India lost 1-2.

Mumbai will take on Baroda in their first game in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Alur.

Selectors should make his role clear for ODI side. He is there sometimes and dropped sometimes. Playing for 5+ years now and still we don't know if he is permanent in odi side at any spot. Selectors should either give him a long go at #4 spot or just drop him and never pick him for odi side.

He should be limited to test matches only can’t go at a SR of 80-85 in shorter formats.
