When you decide to give Dhawan the extra 1 point might as well make it 3.5. Kum se kam pass tho ho jaata

Kohli, bumrah, ishant 7

Pandya 5 because of that one bowling spell.

Pujara just gets passing marks at 4

Everyone else fails under 3.

Agree with everything but Kohli. He is sole and sole reason we got beaten. His marks should be 2 parts. Kohli the bat, and kohli the captain. For Kohli the bat, i will give 8-10, but Kohli the captain gets 0-10. Yes 0-10.

Batsmen all below 5 Pujara , Rahane , Rahul , Dhawan ,Vijay.

Kohli 8 for his goofy captaincy.

Ishant 9. Great performance, but I wish he had a defining innings like his 7-for at Lords last time.

Bumrah 10: I'm not sure what else he could do to get a perfect rating. He did everything asked of him in only his 2nd test series.

Pant: 5, batting was bad, but he looked ok behind the stumps, so brings him to 5.

Ashwin 5, he bowled well early, but he was so bad in the 4th test, he needs some demerits. His batting ability has also disappeared.

Shami is too high, Should be at max 5 more likely 4. He was overall decent at best. He could not swing the ball consistently in conditions which were tailor made for swing bowlers. He also didn't bowl with consistent venom: in the first test only, he sprayed the ball around in the 2nd innings directly allowing Curran to get in. He is supposed to be a specialist with the old ball and cleaning up the tail, but he didn't do his job.

Umesh is too low, should be 3 for mediocre. He has good stats from his 1 test match overall. His 1st innings was wayward. His 2nd innings he bowled well when given the ball. Overall inconsistent.

Kuldeep 1, bad performance in the match he played.

Jadeja 6, did what was asked of him. Took wickets and scored runs. I can't give him much higher based off 1 match.

Pandya: 6, made handy contributions with bat and ball in random innings across the series. He needs to be more consistent for that allrounder title.

DK: 1, mediocre keeping and poor batting overall.

When so many many catches will dropped, you think bowlers are supermen or something to keep taking wickets? With this poor catching unit, whatever wkts they took was bonus!

Ishant was the top most performer.

Ishant's wickets per match is not that good in this series.  Because of that, he can't be the top performer. 18 wickets from 5 tests ... 3.6 wickets per match.

Bumrah was much better and more impactful.  14 wickets from only 3 tests ... 4.7 wickets per match.

Bumrah has lost his Yorker otherwise he would have cleaned the tail.

you need reverse swing for a yorker to be effective in test cricket.

Bowled quite a few good ones in the last IPL.

Missed More than usual.Test Length is affecting his Yorkers. He needs to work on it.

Hitting test lengths consistently is needed in the first 40 overs of ODIs too ... and especially the first 15 overs. And Bumrah was playing ODIs from the start.  We can't hope to have just a death over and yorker specialist in the team.

Bumrah started bowling good yorkers in this IPL after having issues in the first 3 or 4 games.

Ishant had one bad match which is the 2nd test match ( where all bowlers were bad ).

More over, he could not bowl in the 2nd innings of 5th match due to injury.

So, it is effectively, 18 wickets in 8 innings, a pretty 2.25 wickets per innings which is good!

More over, Ishant has picked the top order wickets and his wickets have setup the later on collapse (like the Pandy's 5 wkt spell).

Please don't just divide wickets per matches and determine whether a bowler is top performer. A top performance by a bowler (especially a fast bowler) also includes when and what wickets he takes and how he helps the team perform better.

My reply was to a statement,  " Ishant was the top most performer "  ( for India in this series among both batters and bowlers )

Ishant has bowled well in this series ... but he was not the best pacer pacer from our side based on either impact or threat posed by different types of threatening deliveries.  It was Bumrah.

Almost all of Ishant's wickets in this series have been via outswingers to left handers / inswinger to right handers.  In the innings when he could not bowl much, it was the best batting conditions for the series and the ball wasn't swinging much.  It could have been a blessing in disguise for his stats.

You are right that wickets per match, as the sole parameter, does not give a complete idea about a bowler's performance.  Problem is ... forum posts are often made with little time in hand and can't be complete in all aspects all the time.    : )
