Ajit Agarkar questions selection of Ravindra Jadeja over Krunal Pandya as a replacement player

New Delhi: India's wondrous campaign in Dubai for the Asia Cup 2018 that has taken them to Super Four following victories over Hong Kong and Pakistan, has been encircled by a series of three victories including all-rounder Hardik Pandya. And BCCI, on Thursday, announced Deepak Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Siddharth Kaul as the replacement for Hardik, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur, respectively. However, former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar has questioned the selection of Jadeja over Krunal Pandya, while referring to Chahar-Kaul callup as 'T20 selections'.

Agarkar felt that Umesh Yadav and Krunal should've been the two likely replacements while expressing his disappointment over the decisions taken by the Indian selectors in announcing replacement players for Asia Cup 2018. Umesh was part of England limited-overs series where he picked up 10 wickets in six matches. He last played the Test series opener at Edgbaston in England. Meanwhile, Krunal has been excellent with the bat and with the ball both in domestic level and in India A campaign. He picked up seven wickets in eight matches and has been effective enough with the bat as well. He averages 35.90 with the bat in List A cricket. In fact in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Baroda and Mumbai, he scored 85 runs and finished with figures of 1 for 24.

"Yes, strange couple of changes for India. Firstly, I don't know where Umesh Yadav is? He only played one Test in England. Deepak Chahar and Siddharth Kaul both looked to me like T20 selections. I like Chahar, he can swing the ball, he has got abilities. But he is not the like-for-like replacement for Hardik Pandya. Hardik is a much better batsman than he is. You have lost Shardul Thakur, your out-and-out seamer and they have gone from Siddharth Kaul, but ideally, you should have gone for someone like Umesh Yadav, who has a bit of experience," Agarkar told ESPNCricinfo

"Maybe they have seen the pitch condition and realised that they don't need pace and need a bowler who can bowl straight. I can't quite understand Ravindra Jadeja selection, to be honest. It was a nice opportunity for the selectors to bring someone like Krunal Pandya. He seems to be doing okay in List A cricket and Vijay Hazare Trophy. For Jadeja, is the captain confident enough to bowl him 10 overs on flat conditions? That is the reason he went out of the team for he was no longer effective enough, nor getting wickets. Krunal Pandya is a better batsman. Jadeja has got abilities, but you wouldn't bat him in top six."

Jadeja last played for India in ODI in July 2017 versus West Indies. In 2017, he played just seven matches before the emergence of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in limited-overs cricket. Also, Jadeja has been wicketless after bowling 71.4 overs in List A cricket since his wicket of Shakib Al Hasan in Champion Trophy 2017 semis.

Scope for left arm slow bowlers is limited unless you are an all rounder or playing in helpful conditions or a Bedi

KP adds more value with his power hitting abilities. In fielding both of them are similar. In bowling, Jadeja could be more clever due to experience

Considering our fragile middle order, and with Hardik out, Krunal had a stronger case

How Axar got injured without playing any matches.

It's seems team management wanted Jadeja,Kaul so Axar Shardul has been niggled out.

The team management wants such players who can be thrown out easily. They can't take the risk of selecting Pant, Khaleel who can be successful & it would be difficult for them to drop them.

It is not hard for Axar to get injured. Probably he was carrying a hot dog for Dhoni.

Nothing much to see here. He didn't even ask the most obvious question. How did Jadeja earn his ODI call when he has not done anything in domestic cricket.

Kaul and Chahar being T20 selections are right.

But he did manage to suck up to his fellow Mumbai player Thakur by calling him out-and-out seamer. Lol. You gotta be kidding me.

Agarkar's chances of making a comeback for WC19 is going down the drain with these harsh truths.

Age is on Aggy's side  (  he is older than most other pacers but still fit  ).  And he is surely mediocre and slow in pace these days.  Ticks all the boxes for a LOI comecack for Team India nowadays if he can come out of retirement.
