Unbond like Bond films

The 3 films below, in the order of their release, have deviated from the regular formula relatively speaking during their respective period:

1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Released in 1969, this is the only film starring John Lazenby as Bond. Peter Hunt, who served as the editor in many of the previous Bond films was given the Director duties. Hunt wanted to make a different Bond film and one which was relatively closer to the book (I have the book but yet to read it). In the film, Bond gets married too. There are some great skiing sequences. John Barry gave one of his best background scores. With Bond fans in love with Connery and his style, the film was not as successful as the previous Bond films (but still grossed $500M+ when adjusted for inflation). However, over the years this one has become a cult classic. Because of the Christmas type of atmosphere in the film, it is a good watch during the Christmas too. There are no major negatives here apart from the plot to use the ladies for "destructive" purposes. I pretty much like the whole film and is probably among my top 5 Bond films

2. Licence to Kill. After the "funny Bond" played by Sir Roger Moore, Dalton decided to play a Bond that was closer to the book in his debut "the Living Daylights", which is the last film that John Barry provided background music for and the score for which is considered iconic. Licence to Kill faced issues during its production ranging from strikes to limited marketing. However, this is probably John Glen's best directorial effort. The film is relatively gritty and Dalton presents a ruthless Bond, who goes rogue to take on the South American drug cartel to avenge his friend. The background score is by Michael Kamen, which is good but minimizes the use of the Bond tune.  When it was released in 1989, it was an ok hit. However, the film has gained a lot of following over the years. As for the negatives, the film starts slowly to develop the story but the 2nd half has some of the most memorable stunts including the truck chase sequence that stay with you long, along w/ Dalton's performance, after you have watched the film

3. Casino Royale. After the departure of Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig brought in the ruthless elements of Dalton back in 2006. The film tells the story of Bond before he is the "couth Bond" as we know. When you watch the film, it does makes an impact on you. It was a big hit too up on its release. Background score by David Arnold suits the film. My favorite sequences are the ones in Madagascar and Bahamas. The negatives, if any, would be that the second half was relatively slow much like the first half in Licence to Kill. But necessary for this type of films.  And unlike Licence to Kill, it lacks memorable stunts apart from the sequence in Madagascar

The “Bond” formula was established in GF and perfected in TB. FRWL was released before GF, therefore if you look at chronology/history, it is not an offbeat film. Without looking at chronology/history,  it can be considered a different Bond film (but only because it was released before GF).

The film that established the Bond formula, GF, directed by Guy Hamilton:

The film that perfected the Bond formula, TB, directed by Terence Young:

Besides TB, Terence Young also directed the first two Bond films. Sometimes, I feel as if he influenced how Bond acts on screen. He is said to have taken Connery under his wing!
