Money invested in Indian Premier League is bearing fruits for Team India: Wasim Akram

Recommended Posts

Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Indian cricket team produced a stellar show in the recently concluded Asia Cup where the Men in Blue clinched their seventh title in the continental tournament. While many believed India might struggle a bit in the absence of their regular captain Virat Kohli, that wasn’t the case as most of the Indian batsmen were among the runs in the tournament. Lauding India’s dominance in the tournament, Pakistani legend Wasim Akram said that the team was much ahead of all other Asian teams.

"India proved to be well ahead of everyone," former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram told AFP. India resumed their rivalry with arch-rivals Pakistan who struggled throughout the tournament. Men in Blue thrashed Pakistan in back-to-back matches, much to the dismay of the Pakistani fans.

Wasim, who is widely regarded as one of the finest players to have played the game, also lauded the Indian Premier League saying that the investment made in the lucrative tournament was paying rich dividends for Indian cricket. "Their exposure is greater, they have financial benefits and the money invested in their system like the Indian Premier League is bearing fruits."

Talking about the ICC World Cup 2019, Wasim said that the Men in Green will have to do a lot of work in all departments of the game. "It's hard to predict eight months in advance but I am sure Pakistan will bounce back. They have some serious work to do in both bowling and batting. Bangladesh have an inspirational captain in Mashrafe Mortaza and Afghanistan is becoming a dangerous team," Wasim added.

IPL has made the debutants of india fearless...thats it. Otherwise no such special gains from it.

Main thing is getting the guys to seriously lookat sports as a mean to livelyhood, you would think Siraj would never have dreamt of the exposure or try to be a fast bowler in the past, but IPL exposure to see guys like Bumrah make it big from nowhere give thousands of people hope and try to make it big.

Our talent pool has risen ,hopefully batters don't forget how to bat in tests ,biggest worry is selectors and Management's who are self defeating as far as our cricket is concerned.

Benefits of IPL.

1. Platform for youngsters to highlight their performance to national audience. Ashwin,Jadeja,Pandya,Bumrah,Pant,Kuldeep,Chahal partially came in because of IPL performance.

2.Youngsters develop  mental strength, experience and confidence due to mingling and performing against intl players.

3.Pace bowling improvement is partially due to IPL demand for domestic fast bowlers and introduction of diets and training that these pacers get when in the setup.

4.But most importantly it has greatly expanded the active pool of professional cricketers who can make it big even without playing for india. It reduces the financial insecurity of players who dont get to play for India and makes cricket a much more attracting profession.

Negative aspects -

1.Effects on batting technique in tests and lack of patience.

2.The schedule further exhausts our main players who already have to deal with a brutal non stop cricket window.

@Lala comments please.

This ruins cricket of other countries like WI. Players are chasing behind money and no heart of playing for their country. Unlike good old days like 90s where every player wants to play national side and wants to do better for their country. Now what, players deny playing for their country during this corrupted league. How many test matches did narain or pollard or malinga play for their countries? In 90s, those days during in April, May every team had tournaments. We played sharjah those days. Now all countries adjusted their schedule according to this sh*t league and all the players are greedy on money and boards too asking for money. Wasim too old man who has no pension, therefore just wants to join this for money. Other than that though he was a good bowler, he is not a good coach at all. :cantstop:

We won the 2011 WC on the back of some ATG players like Sachin and Indian ATG players like yuvi, zaheer and contributions from Gambhir, Raina and Dhoni(in the final).

Lol @Laaloo has given the credit for Dhoni and he reckons Dhoni is ATG player. :cantstop:

Players do need to earn a living. IPL or no IPl the outcome of Windies cricket will be the same.

Our t20 team won the only trophy when there was no IPL. Since then, it's been filled with csk rejects and we haven't won anything since. We won the 2011 WC on the back of some ATG players like Sachin and Indian ATG players like yuvi, zaheer and contributions from Gambhir, Raina and Dhoni(in the final). We really won that when IPL was only 3 years old so IPL was still in it's infamy. What have we won since then? We say we have one of the best if not the best t20 leagues in the world, yet our LOIs is filled with consolidators like Dhoni, rayadu, and Karthik. When will the players with the highest strike rate in IPL get a chance? Money invested is fine. But it's not really bearing fruits apart from some exposure of fast bowlers. But even then we choose to recall tried and test failures.

There are three  aspects of it.

1. Our inability to select and persists with right players is completely different issue. In olden era, a player whould have given up his career because of selection. Now, he has IPL to continue playing.

2. As far as ATG is concerned, ATG is not made in a day. It takes a decade of International cricket before someone starts getting a following. We have to understand/accept that filling the shoes of someone like Sachin, MSD and Dravid is simply not easy.

Our performance in various leagues is despite we havent got a ATG. Nearest to ATG in current setup is Virat Kohli. Potential ATG is probably Shaw and Bhumrah. Our possible bowling lineup is probably one of the best in world.

Also without chkg IPL stats, I can say for certainity during early editions of IPL, local players were just to make up 11 players. Their contribution to bowling and batting was next to nothing. Even pensioner like Dravid,Nehra and Bhajji were better bet then most bats or Chaival,Mohit Sharma. Same hasnt been case for last few IPL sessions. Our domestic boyz have joined the party.

3. IPL can not provide SENA conditions when we have Court Judges dictating that you can not water the ground. So solution to your current SENA dilemma is play IPL in two phases. After curren phase take a monsoon break and start again at end of monsoon session. So there is possibility of green track and occasional rain.

So if anything, I will say extend IPL and see how results change in SENA countries too.
