Currently, Rahane is averaging 41. After coming out a cropper in the recent series in S&E, the SENA specialist is supposed to pick up the mantle in A. Will he be successful in moving up his test average or will it decrease (may even fall below 40)?

Rahane has been poor in tests in the last 2 years.

Problem is ...  despite this poor run, we have not developed a new batsman for the No.5 position.  Vihari was not tried in this test.

Plus, we have a newbie, Pant, at No.6.

In this backdrop, it is difficult to exclude Rahane from the squad to Australia ... although he deserves to be excluded.

Vihari should get a game in the 2nd test.

Good thing is that Shaw-Pujara-Kohli look good so we can leverage on their good form to bring in Vihari to see how he goes .... Rahul can be hot or cold too so can even bring in Agarwal for the 2nd test  :dontknow:

His form is majorly in downtrend going by averages. It will be a very tough  for him to average over 45, which he did at one point of his career.

He touched 50-51 at one point of time...after 25-30 tests.

I thought he will be upgraded version of vvs but alas....

Rahane's cumulative test average:

  • He achieved an avg of 51 in his 29th test
  • The avg immediately dropped below 50 after the next test
  • Now it is 41
  • So a huge drop of 10!

at this point , rather dropping him....ways shud be looked to get him back in form

Rahane in form overseas is a huge bonus

IMO

Virat shud sit on bench in 2nd test against WI, him playing gains nothing as he will only make runs

But if he rest rahane gets to bat up n vihari also gets a game, In subcontinent its better to bat up rather at 5 specially for rahane who doesnt enjoy spin at start. The kind of indiscipline WI have u never knw rahane might get back in form. Also captaincy may also help

it has to be after the AUS series .It is the most perfect scenario to identify the problem with Rahane. If he shines there he would prove every criticizer wrong and that he was just being himself in his weaK zone . If he fails  , then it can be confirmed that he can't be relied upon in the long run.

You cannot have one country where we play once every 3-4  years as a strong zone

There you go. I remember checking on cricinfo and even on tv.

To gradually build up average of 51 after 29 tests in wonderful. Shows how flop he has been in last few years that the average has dropped considerably and he has not been able to maintain the standard he set at one point of time. Tough ask but that's what is required at this level.

From this generation of batsmen, Virat Kohli  has managed to sustain the top class average over 50. Cheteshwar Pujara has average of 49.  Should have  more players with significantly better career averages than what the remaining guys are managing so far.
