Umesh Yadav to replace Shardul Thakur in India’s ODI squad

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Umesh Yadav as Shardul Thakur’s replacement in India’s squad for the first two ODIs against Windies.

 

Mr Thakur suffered a right adductor tendon injury and has been ruled out of the Paytm ODI series.

Its a decision to reward hard-working long format players with opportunities in the shorter format, which is way more lucrative.  

 

Put yourself in a players' shoes - how many of you would like to be saddled with a "test only" tag?  Which could cost you millions in potential earnings?

Umesh is already playing IPL and earning mllions.

6/88 is fine on a flat pitch but can Umesh take 6/25 on helpful pitch is the question , I am not sure he can do that, he simply has no control  and bowl too many boundary balls in test.In odis what are they expecting him to do, I don't he is a good odi bowler.

Did Ishant get an IPL bid last year?  not in the auction, but later on when some bowlers got injured.  

 

Bottomline, players who don't play LOI cricket for India are 2nd tier stars.  Jadeja, Ash, Umesh, Shami - all of them want their shot at LOI cricket.  Not all deserve it, but against a crap team like WI or Zim, let them have a few games.

Karthick got a test match callup based on T20Is. Rohit got back to the test team in 2016 and 2017 based on ODI performances.  So, it is the other way round too.

 

My impression is this team management does not like to groom new players.

 

New players are selected only if known players are injured or there is a disaster in critical series / tournaments.  Kuldeep-Chahal after CT 2017 final loss which created a furore  ...  Shaw, Vihari, Mayank after England 2018 disaster. Pant when Saha was injured and Karthick looked like a fish out of water.

 

The comfort of known names is too alluring.  Which is why Karthick, Rayudu, Gambhir, Yuvraj  all came back.

Umesh is not the ideal bowler for ODIs ... but still better than Shardul, Kaul and Chahar.

 

Atleast he can take wickets, although he is likely to be more expensive than is ideal.

I hope the known names Shami and Umesh do not block rookie Khaleel's inclusion in the playing 11.  That is usually Kohli's modus operandi.

 

Only hope is ... Khaleel being a left arm pacer maybe included for variety.

if we keep bringing all under-performing players against minnows then how are we going to test and try new players and develop them.  If we want to build a great team, we need to be less emotional about current players and objectively should always try to find new players and see if they can help build that great team.

This is the only worry. Khaleel has done well in the chances that he has got and should play ahead of Shami and Umesh but Kohli will again go for experience.

Personally I would have liked to see a youngster like prasidh or saini but still 

would take yadav over mediocre thakur any day, thakur is not even half the bowler that umesh is.
