PCB chairman Ehsan Mani on Tuesday said it was “hypocrisy” on part of BCCI that it lets India play Pakistan at ICC tournaments but ignores bilateral series. The BCCI has time and again said that it needs government clearance to play bilateral series. A frustrated PCB has filed a compensation case of Rs 447 crore with the Disputes Resolution Forum of ICC for not honouring an MoU which required the two countries to play six bilateral series from 2015-2023 The hearing in the case concluded earlier this month.

“There is a lot of hypocrisy at the moment. India plays an ICC event against us but doesn’t play a bilateral series. That is something that we need to address,” Mani told ESPN Cricinfo.

Mani stressed the resumption of bilateral cricketing ties is necessary as fans from both sides are eager to watch the two countries compete against each other.

“The main thing is that we play cricket against each other. When we play cricket, especially in our countries - when we go to India or when they come here - helps in increasing people-to-people contact. Indian fans come to Pakistan. Lakhs of fans have come to Pakistan from India and everyone goes back happy.

“There’s no better way to improve the relations between countries than having sporting contacts, cultural contacts. For me, that is far more important than any amount of money that comes into the game,” Mani said.

PCB has not been able to generate revenue as India have not been a part of their cricketing fixture for years now. The two countries last played a short limited overs bilateral back in 2012.

Mani said, Indo-Pak series had the “highest value financially in the world”, but he maintained that the PCB’s desire for the resumption of ties was about more than money. When asked if Pakistan cricket could survive without bilaterals against India, he had a one-word answer: “forever.”

“Money isn’t the issue, it’s more about the game,” he said. “There are more viewers for an India-Pakistan match than any other match in the world. So, if the Indian government decides to deprive its own citizens of watching an India-Pakistan match then that is their choice.”

He also said that with India going into the general elections in 2019, he knows that chances of a series in near future is bleak.

“Indian public obviously love to see India and Pakistan playing, and so does the Pakistan public. Rest of the work is of the politicians and frankly, once India is in the lead-up to its elections next year, so I don’t think there will be any softening in their attitude. But in the long term, the people want it and you can’t go against the will of the people forever.”

He's playing to his own gallery.  As much as the Indian public wants to see Ind-Pak cricket, they also want to see Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim extradited.  Plenty of people support the principled stance to suspend bilateral cricket ties until Pakistan's "government" cleans up its act.

So are you saying we forget our principles when it comes to ICC events?

Look I despise Pakistan and its state sponsored terrorism too. But I agree that BCCIs stance is hypocritical. If you think Pakistan is killing our soldiers and we should not engage with them in cricket field, stop all matches. It cant be, oh look its an ICC event or an Asia cup...so we have to play. Our media goes gaga about the game, Mamta Banerjee felicitates ex Pak players in Eden Gardens etc etc. But come bilateral we suddenly turn patriotic and think about martyrs.

And if its about not losing points in ICC tournaments by forfeiting the Pak game, why cant BCCI request ICC not to place Ind & Pak in same group? Its a simple request and BCCI has enough clout to make it happen. But they would never do that because its a money maker. Since 2011 WC, every ICC events had Ind-Pak in same group.

Its all about money for BCCI and they are fooling aam hindustani janata. Its far from being a principled stance.

It is not hypocritical.  You must understand if India boycott Pak in ICC events, Pak is not losing anything.  They will still get their share of money from ICC even we if we dont play them while India will lose points for no reason.  While if India plays bilateral series with Pakistan, it will mean PCB will earn money at the expense of India and most of that money will be coming from Indian sponsors and India instead will get terrorists as gift.

This puzzles me too.But bcci can ask icc to keep them in separate groups to begin with,

But yes if they meet in a knockout match then its all part of coincidence we cant do much

Why cant BCCI request ICC to keep them in separate groups? In that way we don't lose points and also stick to our principled stance. Even in Asia cup, the scheduled was organized in a way that it guaranteed 2 Indo-Pak matches. Now dont tell me, BCCI can't request ACC/ICC to keep them in separate groups. And then the way our media hypes up that game by having multiple shows inviting Pak cricketers, it give outsiders a feeling that Indian public is desperate for this match.

My point is simple - If you think principally we should not play Pakistan then stop all matches. Else play bilateral too.

At present BCCIs stance is hypocritical and even Gambhir recently said the same.

India Pakistan match is money maker for ICC that is the reason they are grouped together whether its ICC event or Asia Cup.

This time I believe it was more of COA than BCCI being there but you know it yourself whether ICC or ACC Indo-Pak match is a massive draw for them money matters.I find this sports and politics should not be mixed more irritating from their side how can you play and at the same time killings of army and jawans are going on.
