Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan is set to replace Lasith Malinga in a mentoring role for Mumbai Indians. Malinga, who took over as the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians after going unsold in the last season may return to play again. If not bought by Mumbai Indians, he could very well turn out for any other side.

Lasith Malinga, who has been absolutely prolific for Mumbai Indians, had taken up a mentor role with them in the last season. Malinga has taken 154 wickets in 110 matches at an average of just above 18. Should Zaheer Khan take up the coaching role, it will be his first stint as a coach for any team.

The left-arm pacer has been part of Rohit Sharma and Co, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Daredevils, however, is yet to end up on the winning side of any team. The pacer will be determined to turn MI’s fortunes around after their miserable last season.

Although during his stay with Delhi Daredevils, he had been a player cum mentor, this could be his first assignment as the official mentor. Khan, who had retired from international cricket in 2015, looked set to play the 2018 IPL, however, his name was nowhere which meant that he had ended his IPL career.

Malinga to press his case for the World Cup by playing in Indian Premier League

“It is expected. Malinga has been playing other leagues in the world. He had even played for Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, and he wants to test himself in the Asia Cup which precedes the World Cup. He wants to play at the World Cup to be match fit for the World Cup.” an IPL insider said as quoted by the report in Mumbai Mirror.

Lasith Malinga, since his first season has been part of the Mumbai Indians. The speedster has been at the helm of their bowling attack. He also bagged the Purple Cap for taking 28 wickets in 16 matches in IPL 2011. Mumbai Indians have also been one of the most consistent sides in the cash-rich tournament with three titles to their name.

Bumrah will start floating the ball in at 130 kph now, after IPL 2019.

Coaches asking bowlers to cut down on pace etc is over hyped. We have the best pace attack in the world in tests under the much maligned Bharat Arun. Does he deserve all the credit?

He may have  partly done a good job but usually if a bowler can bowl at 150k he will never try to bowl at 130ks just because someone told him and if it is not necessary.

Take Steyn for example on flat pitch or when there is reverse he bowls at 150ks. On swinging pitches and green mambas he bowls in the 130s.

Venkatesh Prasad was blamed for Ishants down period  but people forget  that he was also the coach when Ishant was man of the series against  a very strong Aussies and had a stellar season.

Ishant himself started imitating Zaks action which  70% blame goes to him and 30% maybe to the coach for not telling him it is a bad idea.thats about it.

Indian bowlers faltered away  in the past partly due to their own stupidity and laziness  and also the intangible factor here being that they hardly  had good role models to look up to. Ishant, Sreeshanth etc used to look like different bowlers when they played alongside Zak. Even guys like Munaf even when he had less pace was difficult to get away in ODIs while playing alongside with Zak.

Zak,Nehra themselves had a spring in their step while playing alongside Srinath.

The real good ones mature and figure out their strengths like Srinath,Zak and even the new version of Ishant did. The rest fade away because maybe they didn’t have it in them to begin with.

Zak is a Indian bowling icon, so if Bumrah,Pandya etc can learn things like reading batsman and setting them up and other tips from Zak it will be great. If Zak tells them to bowl at 120ks and they blindly follow they are themselves to be blamed.
