National selectors biased against Mumbai players, says Sunil Gavaskar

Once, there was no dearth of ‘kar’s in the Indian cricket team which symbolised the dominance Mumbai had on the national cricket scene. But now, things seem to have changed as former India captain Sunil Gavaskar – one of those achiever ‘kar’s from Mumbai, have accused the national selectors of depriving players of Mumbai the privilege to represent India on the national stage.

The iconic opener recently brought forth the example of Siddesh Lad who is yet to get a call-up for India ‘A’ despite performing consistently well in the domestic circuit. Lad has averaged over 43 with six tons in 44 first-class games for Mumbai and played a key role in helping the team win their latest and 41st title in Ranji Trophy in 2015-16.

Gavaskar even compared 26-year-old Lad’s situation with Mumbai’s domestic giant Amol Muzumdar who despite scoring tons of runs in first-class cricket, could never make it to the Indian team.

“There’s another Mumbai lad who invariably scores when his team is in trouble, and that is Siddhesh Lad, but despite his consistency he never finds himself even in the ‘A’ teams as the bias against Mumbai players is so deep- set,” the 69-year-old wrote in a column for Mid-Day.

If a Kumble praises a Karun Nair, advocates and arranges for better cricket facilities for the Karnataka ranji team - its just a senior player doing right by his ranji team.

But if a Bombay player says anything - "lobby".  "mafia".  "bias".  blah blah.

While guys like Saurav Ganguly shamelessly gets underserving Bengal players into A team squads to tour SA.

I want Gambhir to say something on this and spark a new controversy. All these Indian legends be it from Karnataka or Bombay or anywhere need to be rattled by Gambhir’s tweet. Need a big fight among seniors right about now so that our current team can relax and play and win overseas while these old farts fight over on news channels.

Siddhesh Lad was not even in top 5 run scorer in Ranji 2017.  Ranked 8th in number of runs as well as 6th best in average among top 8 run scorers of Ranji 2017/ 2018.

2017/2018 Ranji Trophy top runs scorers:

In 2016/2017 Siddhesh Lad's batting average was a normal 43.50. He was not in Top 4 even for Mumbai Team. He was not even in Top 50 run scorer in Ranji Trophy 2016 / 2017.

In 2015 / 2016 he was 14th highest run scorer with average of just 40.64

Sunny expects such a batsman to get into A Team .

The author is another clueless guy. Average of 43 is nothing for Indian FC batsmen in our conditions. Moreover he also mentions "consistently well"...So last 3 years averages of 50.66, 43.50 and 40.64 is consistently well.  Author should have a look at averages of other batsmen in that case and there are too many who have done much better than Siddhesh Lad.  What a stupid comment by author on his performance.

Typical Shamless Bombay guy just like Manjrekar, Tendulkar and Pawar. All have agenda and act/speak based on what's best for mumbai

Someone tell this fool that Indian test team is full of guys who don't deserve to be playing but have got extended run because they are from mumbai like Rahane and Rohit

And then you have the most underserving coach selected because of recommendation from mumbaikar Sachin, then the antics of Pawar against Mithali Raj

Thakur selected ahead other more deserving bowlers

There is already huge selection bias in favor of mumbai players and this guy is still whining and moaning....pathetic

Vinod Kambli furious about Mumbai cricketers not being selected for Caribbean tour

Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli lost his cool after the after the Indian selectors did not pick Ranji champions Mumbai’s trio of  Aditya Tare, Shreyas Iyer and Siddhesh Lad for the four-match Test series in the Caribbean. The 44-year-old left-handed batsman took to Twitter to slam the selectors and the selection process. The Sandeep Patil-led selection panel picked the 17-man squad which will travel to West Indies in July for the Test series under the leadership of Virat Kohli. The squad has three Mumbai cricketers including Ajinkya Rahane, who has been promoted to vice-captain, batsman Rohit Sharma and uncapped pacer Shardul Thakur.

However, the former Mumbai cricketer wasn’t too pleased with the choices  the selectors made. Only one cricketer from the Ranji team made it to the Indian squad which was rather shocking for Kambli, as his tweets suggest.

He also questioned the inclusion of wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the Test team.

Siddesh Lad in no way deserves a A team place ahead of Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Karun Nair and Shreyas Iyer.  There are many more batsmen ahead of him in FC cricket. Sunny has gone crazy.

Do Abhimanyu Easwaran and Ravi Samarth deserve a place ahead of Siddesh Lad?  That's not a crazy question, is it?

I don't necessarily agree with Gavaskar about "anti-Mumbai" bias.  But he has a right as a former Bombay player to advocate for players from his FC team.
